Gas tank pressurized

Featured Replies

What causes the gas tank to get so pressurized? I opened my gas cap today and gas shot out and covered me in fuel. Thats never happened before. Is my gas cap bad?

This is in my 84 ea81.

:brow: There is something wrong with che charcoal canister system the recovers vapors. My book goes to 90, i should get the fac books from the addict. It sounds like the purge valve is stuck, Also the gas cap is suppsed to relaeas the pressure if its too high for saftey sake. It not a very complcated system. Waht you may want to try is b4 the next fill, remove the line from the canister that goes to the tank, then take the cap off and see whats happens. Canbe a cloged cannister too.

Hum, ok I'll check the canister. They can get clogged up? If I remove the breather hose that runs into the tank, would I be able to blow in it and hear bubbles in the tank? Guess that would be a way to see if there is a blockage in the hose.

They can get cloged up, and the purge solenoid can bad

the old EA-81 style gas cap was a non vented cap, you may be able to upgrade to a newer vented cap so that you don't have that problem. I also have that problem in my 1980, but i open it slowly and it dosn't spit on me very often.

The cap should be sealed, I'm with nipper, sounds like a bad purge solenoid. If its a problem with the electric side of the solenoid (open coil) you should get a ECU code.

Alright, where is the purge solenoid? I'll check that also. The weather has been really cold upper 20's in the morning and high of 60.

if the vent line to the canister is plugged, it will do this. the purge solenoid only lets the line to the canister from the manifold open.

for a totaly different reason i run a gas cap with a tiny hole drilled in it. lets the tank vent. just not as epa friendly, but alot of caps are vented both ways in the old days.

most caps only let air in, not out.
