Clouds of smoke....help....fixed I think.

Featured Replies

As per Herman Melville, "But even so amid the tornadoed Atlantic of my being, do I myself still forever centrally disport in mute calm; and while ponderous planets of unwaning woe revolve round me, deep down and deep inland there I still bathe me in eternal mildness of joy."

Apparently consternation turns to lucidation!

fixed ;^)

Pulled the two day old PCV and it was stuck closed with some kind of gunk so I put the old one back for the time being. But while I was doing that, I noticed all the hoses from the crankcase area and valve covers all meeting and feeding into the throttle body air intake. I thought about the air cleaner and pulled the housing. Air cleaner was pretty well clogged; I have a K&N and haven't looked at it in way too long a time period. I cleaned the filter, oiled it and re-installed it. Most of the smoke is gone and all gone when the engine is warm. Smokes a little when I start it up cold, but I'm thinking of adding some Seafoam to help clean out the plumbing.

I hope the large amount of buildup in the PCV system doesn't point to leaky rings or valve guides.

Anyway - sounds like a big step in the right direction.

Took the car to work today and after a few puffs after startup car ran just fine. I'll give it a run on the interstate later today. Looks like its root cause is the clogged air filter. Time will tell and I'll be using some seafoam or marvel mystery oil with the next oil change.

What is a seafoam? Something i haven't heard of. and what you do with it?

It's an oil/gasoline additive with supposed "magic" powers. Try a search on Seafoam within the USMB; there've been lots of threads about it.

:) I put about 75 miles on the car today; about 50 of that interstate miles and it ran trouble free and without any CEL codes. No ugly smoke coming out the back at any time.

Thats not fair. Who would have guessed a plug air filter on ed's car. I figured everything was in tip-top shape, so regular maintaince items could be ruled out.

BAD ED. As punishment, not allowed to drive the New Brat for a week.

But on the bright side, I bet you will get better gas mileage.

I bet I won't loose as much oil either.

Actually... the 86 GL I got had once failed deq because the air filter was too dirty.

I think Ed just racks up so many miles that the air filter ends up having to be done SO frequently.

We all know he tries to take good care of his car. you ever see the spare parts he carries in that legacy?
