Does anyone know the part number for front wheel hubs, because my subaru keeps eating them alive and the auto parts store says they cant get them without the number

I don't know the part number... but can you explain 'eating them alive'? How often do they die? Splines get stripped out? If the axle nut is torqued to the right amount, they should last dang near forever.

I think you should try replacing the axle, cone washer, and flat washer before resorting to buying a new hub. These cars don't eat hubs for no reason...it's usually because of some other problem.

Try a junkyard. When I tried to buy one at a parts store, they didn't even know what it was (and I had it sitting on their desk). The guy at the junkyard told me to torque the heck out of the axle nut to keep the splines from stripping (as in, much higher torque than the book says), and of course make sure the little conical washer is facing the right way. Don't know if he knew what he was talking about or not, but I've never had another one strip...

Take a good close look at the splines on the axle, once you've stripped a hub or two they get beat out and the corners get rounded off and no amount of spindle nut torque will stop the inevitable.

I vote on a backwards or bad "flat" washer, assuming the castle nut was torqued. That's how I stripped mine. Hubs should last forever if they don't rust.

Books say 145 ft-lbs torque, last axle I bought, had paper in the box saying 175 ft-lbs torgue. I also always re-torque the axle nut after 100 mile or so of driving.

 

Maybe I'm not holding my tonque right when torquing them the 1st time, as I've always had the hub loosen up after driving awhile.

I think the manuals were different than the autos, turbos, or 2wd's (different # of splines), and I can't remember if the EA81's are the same as the EA82's. But even if its just the 4wd manual EA82's, that's still 9 years of cars to choose from. Anyone else have better recollection on this than I do? I know I've seen it in posts about swapping transmissions, so you might search there.

What year / model is your vehicle? I have an older interchange manual (it goes to I believe 87) With that information I could relay to you what the interchange says is the same.

they are expensive because its a cast and precisely machined peice of steel....those kinds of parts are not cheap.

This number appears to be pretty standard for all EA-81 vehicles. I have to agree with the others that stated that you have another issue causing your problem. Rounded splines, improper torque, washer placement etc. Good Luck!

I think I found out part of the problem. Today I tried to tighten the castle nut down on the problem side and the threads on my cv axle stripped right off.
