That noise ...

Featured Replies

Ever since I've had the 96OBW, I've noticed this noise ... always assumed it's normal, but I was just curious. What's that noise that sounds like nesting squirrels that occurs immediate when turning the key and starting the car. Last about a second, then goes away?

maybe a bunch of angry squrrels?

Could be the ABS going through a self test. Easy way to find out is pop the hood and have somone else turn the key and listen

like a loud scratching? mine does that when it starts to get cold out... the spring/gear in my starter is giving out.....

Yes, ABS pump self-test can be noisy. If the noise occurs right before you crank the engine, I would reckon it's the fuel filter being pumped up to pressure. I can hear mine in the morning...whiiiirrrrrrup.

i'd say check the air box for nesting squirrels

Like Setright mentioned; does it do it when you turn the key just to ON, or when you go to START?

One time my t-belt tensioner failed to pump-up properly and it made quite a racket, only lasted a second or two. I don't think that's a common problem though..

Could you, perhaps, have a loose drive belt? If it is happening just as you start the engine. . . That would be a quick and easy fix. . .

Seems mostly when I turn the key, immediately before the motor turns over. I think I've heard the ABS thing before. It's not a rattle or anything, more a sound of warbly scurrying ... hence the squirrels.. :-\
