Why a rear factory LSD will not work in the front...

Featured Replies

...the rear unit is physically SMALLER.

Both bearings are in difffrent locations.

The rings will not interchange due to different bolt pattern (8 bolts rear, 12 bolts front).

I am sure the stubs will not interchange.

I am sure there are more items, however, i did not go beyond comparing the units side by side....

In order to make the rear unit work in the front, EXTREME machining modifications will need to take place.

Phantomgrip=evil

No PG for me. I will go quality with either a Kaaz or Cusco.

Go with Cusco.

after researching...looks like I am going to go with a helical front. Better for tarmac. Clutch type for gravel.

Ok, so what manufacturer makes an LSD for the front of an EA82 transmission?

Go find one for a Legacy or a '93-'01 Impreza and it should fit. Will did another article on how EA82 front diffs and EJxx front diffs are exactly the same right down to the part numbers.

Hi WJM This is Jerry, what is this cusco that you are talking about. I would like more info on this thing. Thanks Jerry

Cusco and Kaaz manufacture aftermarket clutch type LSDs.

Quaife, Torsen, and OBX (ugh) manufacture gear type ATB differentials.

Everybody but torsen makes front diffs for the aforementioned EA/EJ cars. I'll say that gear type LSDs in a front drive application are heavenly. I have a Quafe in my front driver and the operation is completely transparent. You'd think it was an open diff till you put the hammer down at which point it immediately redistributes power appropriately.
