timintc Posted January 20, 2006 Share Posted January 20, 2006 i own a 2000 legacy L just turned 103k and it was timing belt time, plus all the other assorted accessories that go along with that, water pump, seals, drive belts etc. I took it to my local subaru specialist here in Traverse City, its in northern michigan for those not acquainted with these parts, they call themselves the Subaru Guys, basically a father and son operation, now you cant swing a dead cat around these parts without hitting some form of subbie or another so it makes sense that a guy could make a good living specializing in subarus, even with a subaru dealer in town im sure he does quite well, well enough of the plug for him, bottom line out the door was $561.12, and i was wondering what others around the country pay for the same job, be it from dealers or independant mechanics. edrach Posted January 20, 2006 Share Posted January 20, 2006 Wow! I did the same job on my '91 Legacy and bought the OEM parts at 35% off list from an on-line dealership (including the water pump). Parts alone cost me $536; I supplied the labor and it took about 3 hours. I think you got a great deal. I did wind up replacing all the idlers as well as the tensioner since I had 155K on the engine (2nd belt replacement as far as I could tell). Before we can quote this, please post exactly what was done and the prices. For example, how many hours labor and at what rate? What specifically was replaced? Timing belt, cam seals, water pump, thermostat, drive belts, crank seal, oil pump o-ring, any tensioners? What a lot of people get confused on is that not every shop does it differently. Believe it or not a lot of shops/dealers do not replace the water pump. Some shops don't replace the seals. And some shops even replace all the tensioner and idler bearings. I am in southwestern Pennsylvania, about 40 miles south of pittsburgh. I took my 95 Impreza L to the dealship to get a quote, I talked directly to the service dept. manager and he looked it right up on the computer for me. He stated that for just the timing belt, I would be charged around 280 dollars for the whole job, and if I wanted to get the timing belt and the water pump replaced, it would cost be between 400 and 500 dollars in total. He also mentioned that it would be done in one days time. The sad part is, the dealship quoted me these prices which are about 200 dollars less than what my personal mechanice (whom I have discovered is a complete rip-off) quoted me, so luckily in my case, the dealship works to my benefit.
