What's this for and why's it leaking fuel?!? pics

Featured Replies

So this little canister deal on the passenger side (see arrow)?

Among several other issues that are springing up with this car, today that vacuum line (the small one with the T connector in the background of pic2) popped off while I took the aircleaner off. Then I noticed unburnt fuel dripping from the hose. This is the line that goes to the side of the intake manifold.

What is this thing and why's it leak fuel???

It really shouldnt be leaking fuel

It is a device that lets air into the manifold under high vaccum, i.e. when deaccelerating at high revs.

Dunno why it would be leaking:confused:

It's called an anti-backfire valve. There definitely shouldn't be any fuel there.

Yep, its the anti-backfire valve. Maybe it has been pluged into the wrong place? like a fuel line.. Theres so many pipes on those EA82's, its just craziness.

Well since I redid the heads I noticed it backfiring a lot more (maybe just coincidence), always during de-celleration.

I drive almost exclusively freeway driving (60 mi a day to work and back).

Also, to say its "leaking" is exaggerating a little. when I pull the line after being driven, a drop of fuel will develop on the end of the hose. I've wiped it with my finger -sure enough it's unburnt fuel- and one more drop will develop, wipe again and that'd be all.

That hose where I noticed the fuel is a direct line to the passenger side of the intake manifold. Right above the cylinder head port.

Still a weird deal though huh? Carb too rich maybe?

hi

i think that this part sephose to leave the fuel gasses in the engine and dont let it go to the open air....

One of my GLs is stock carbed. I'll take a look later today and tell you where the hoses go.

OK, i just looked and the large hose is connected to a fitting on the EGR valve housing. The vacuum line is connected directly to the port on the manifold closest to it.

Yep, that's what I got.

I'm thinking the carbs too rich. I've got black plugs at #3 & 4 cylinders. 1 & 2 are looking good.

I had an anti-backfire valve failure with my ea71 and just removed it and plugged the hoses, my mechanic rebuilt the carb and set the differant idle speeds etc.. and no more backfiring. Just my two cents
