J98Hudson
We have just replaced the engine in our 98 Legacy Outback due to the driver not noticing that the temperature gauge was pegged on the hot side resulting in a cracked block. Is there an audible temperature alarm available?? I can only find one at West Marine for boat engines. Where on the block is an unused port for such an alarm?? Thanks for your help. mbrickell
you may be able to adapt a vw low coolant warning system, ex. '85 diesel and wire it in with the key dinger should be in new gen some of the old VWs also had an LED ( red ) that would blink when the temp got close to cooking something. very useful, hard to miss a red LED blinking in the middle of your gauge cluster. if you miss that, you should probably turn in your license! perhaps you could adapt something like that. an alarm is a great idea. a really great idea would be an audible oil pressure and coolant temp alarm. actually, now that i think about it, my vw pickup has an audible oil pressure buzzer. no temp buzzer though, but a blinking light is good enough. GeneralDisorder
How about a mechanical hand that flips over and slaps the driver? Or perhaps pass the coil current through some plates on the steering wheel? GD

Skip
I have one in my turbo wagon, but it is home made. I went to NAPA and bought an adjustable themoswitch. This unit has a capillary tube and a bulb, similar to a mechanical water temperature gauge. I used hose clamp and clamped the bulb to the lower radiator hose, then insulated it with some domestic hot water pipe insulation held on with wire ties. I got the loudest 12 volt sounder Radio Shack sells, mounted it under the dash and connected it to the switch. Gave the car a good run and set the alarm just above this trigger temp. Hope this helps email me for more details if you like.
