Mounting extra speakers/cutting holes in doors

Recommended Posts

I'm wanting to mount some new speakers in my '92 Loyale. I've replaced the two front speakers that came in the car. As you probably know, there are only two pre-existing spots for speakers in this model. Where would be the best place to mount new speakers? I was thinking about mounting 6X9's in the back doors and cutting holes through the interiors of the doors to mount them, but I'm thinking that the mounting depth would be to great and would interfere with the plastic sealing sheet that's in there to keep out the moisture. Anybody have experience with this? Where's a good spot? What did you put in? Do's or dont's?

hi, in the front you can't put 6\9, because the glass is going down ....

in the back you can put 6\9.

in my subi, front are 6.5" component with the tweeter down neer the legs , on the plastik, that no-one can see it.

on the rear doors 6.5" the same and the tweeters i put in the middle - i have low console, on the back side of it you have trash-can, you take this trush-can out and you put there 2 tweeters and on them you cut speeker plastic ,the one with hooles ,and you close on it = no one can see it.

and also i have 6\9 on the back.

if you can , buy component speakers, i use to have 6.5" not component but the best 6.5" that money can buy, after i change to component - cheep ones......the component are a lot better, i mean a lot.

didnt wagons have speakers in the rear doors? but, they will have poor imaging as said. on my old wagon i made some contoured wood blocks (covered in fabric), which allowed me to install aftermarket speakers at an angle suitable for better imaging and sound quality.

I was in the same boat as you yesterday, I decided it would be a pain to run wires all the way to the rear hatch, so I decided that the other doors would be all right. Sure enough, I take off the panel, theres already speaker wire and holes drilled for speakers, FROM THE OEM! So im excited...I just need to get some spacers so I can mount my speakers,(their deep).

Oh, and mine is a 93 Loyale

  • 1 month later...

I'm in the same boat, I'd like to put some new speaker in the front and install some in the rear as well.

My question is: What size speaker will fit in the front and what size will fit into the back if I'm looking for an easy install?

For the front speakers, the factory speakers are 4.5's. Normaly there is not enough space to put 6" ers, so you normally have to mount them outside of the panel. Last year while at the J yard I started tearing into a bunch of subie, you know, just exploring, I stumbled upon a solition for this problem. The speaker brackets from the doors of an XT places the speaker out about 1/2' allowing the window to clear. This allows you to mount the speakers inside the panel. I think the Legacy also has speaker brackets that will work for the front.... I think.

All EA82's have speaker holes in the back doors, but only the GL's/GL-10's actually had speakers in them. Other cars just had a door panel covering the hole. So, go ahead and mount speakers in there, and you can either drill holes in your door panel to let the sound out, or use GL panels with the pre-mounted speaker hole.

I just put a new stereo in my 87 GL wagon. I went with a Sony Xplod cd player, with 3 way Pioneer 180 watt speakers in the back and Pioneer 130 watt speakers in the front. The back door panels had to be opened up for the speaker to fit, the front I left behind the factory grill. I rewired all 4 speakers right to the stereo unit, and it sounds great. I just wish I had read the boards before I started, it would have saved me some time. The front speakers are mounted on the brackets that move them out so the windows will roll down. I am still thinking about some 6x9's in the rear door.
