HLA Secrets

Featured Replies

I couldn't stand the ticking anymore and the engine flush didn't help, so I decapitated it. I replaced the soft HLA's but know i'm stumped. How do you keep the rocker arms in place during re-assembly. Grease didn't work. They kept falling off. The only thing I could come up with is to turn the car on its side. But that is hard on the body panels. So whats the secret...

I use petroleum jelly. It helps also to have the camshaft sprocket pointer aligned for timing belt installation, so that you are not working against the valve springs.

use high quality thick wheel bearing grease. put a nice glob on the rocker arm, hang it on the HLA and that is enough. for kicks you can sort of smear the grease lightly over the top of the rocker arm and around the HLA, giving it a nice coat of continuous grease holding it on. they won't come off unless you touch them.

Lots of people use Vaseline too - seems to do the job. Engine assembly lube will work as well.

Personally I just turn the car on it's side, and hold it there with one hand while I put on the cam case with the other. :headbang:
