October 24, 200322 yr 84 Turbo Brat coming in to work this morning, when I would let off the gas to the point where it was dropping below 1000 rpms almost to idle speed, then the ECS light would come on. flicker almost. then if I sped up, it would go off. any thoughts...
October 24, 200322 yr Let it idle and the ECS light stay on and then look at the brain box under the dash for trouble codes?
October 24, 200322 yr Author is the ecs box supposed to be different than the NA soobies? this one has a remanned sticker on it, and doesn't look like any I'm used to....
October 24, 200322 yr Mine look slightly different on my 83 Wagon and the spare one I have from the 84 coupe but they still have the LED light.
October 24, 200322 yr Yup, thier different. It will have more codes to it also. If its a reman, I hope it has the light. The most common problem, and from your discription of whats happening with yours, is the EGR valve. Maybe check this out, see if the hoses are ok and if its working properly. Rob
October 24, 200322 yr There's an ECS light!!!! Woah, wonder if mine works. I've done a lot of stuff to the motor that I'm sure would make it come on. Emissions type stuff. Or does the light only come on if there is something fatally wrong?!
October 24, 200322 yr Back when I had an EA81 in mine with the ECU controlled carb I had a similar problem, but in my case the ECU was actuating a "feedback solenoid" that was cutting the fuel so the engine would die. To fix the problem I unplugged the ECU and hurled it as far into the woods as it would go, then I drove it without further incident.
