The J/Y has about a million old Hondas, most with OK interiors. I'm thinking about swapping in the front seats from a '91 Prelude (with the width-adjustable bolsters). Tape measure says it should work.

I thought about that, but the Honda seats fit me so well.....(I weigh 245# and am 6'4")

 

Prelude seats=dark grey leather, stiff foam, supercomfy, $35 each at J/Y

Subaru seats-grey cloth, weak foam, pointy sharp springs up my butt.

 

I reckon the worst I'll have to do is fab up a custom mount for the Hondas.

the biggest concern would be making sure it lines up right with the seatbelt, and that it is FIRMLY attached in place - why? - because in case of an accident, you dont want it to come apart on you

 

if you are most concerned about safety, GL-10 seats are very nice, and will bolt into any EA82 with no mods (adjustable height, headrests, and of course lean, distance, lumbar) - people have put legacy seats in, but it requires welding togeter a subframe, or carefully making adaptor brackets

 

I doubt honda seats will fit easily at all - be prepared to do some major fabbing, and be sure that you use LARGE pieces of metal - just realize what's at stake......

The seat conversion is made out to be a bigger deal than it really is. I put legacy LSI drivers seat in my wagon. It was simple. As long as the seat frame with is 17 inches, they can be easily adapted. You'll need some flat bar and some nuts and bolts. drill a few new holes in the bottom of the seat and you'll be fine.

 

As for the seat belt, you wont be messing with those because the latch is bolted to the hump in the middle of the car and the belt itself stays with the B pillar.

 

As for the comment on being careful doing this, I say dont worry about it. Subaru's way of bolting the seats down isnt all that great. Not to mention the bracket that the seat bolts to the floor with is made out of very thin sheet metal and its usually rusty. I've pulled subaru seats just by wiggling them side to side til the brackets broke off at the floor bolts.

 

I have a CRX seat at my shop and a quick measure of it shows that it will fit with fairly minor modification

Doubler plates on both sides of the floor and grade 5 bolts are part of the package I have planned. It's got to be easier than fitting '88 Daytona seats into a '68 Beetle. THAT was a huge pain in my (seat).

Get the seats you like. As long as they're not too wide for the room between the door sill and the transmission tunnel, you can adapt them. No reason to be uncomfortable. Factory seat installations just use a plate welded to the sheet metal to reinforce the bolt location. You can do the same thing with a plate of sheet metal or some fender washers.

Check the USRM for a template and ideas on how to fab up an adaptor.

the 80's corolla gts' had the bolster tightener also, i like they way those seats hold. sounds like a worth while swap, good luck.

May want to look for XT seats... those would probably be easier to swap in, and they fit me great. (I'm 250lbs and 6') Everyone says that they feel better than the rest (I wouldn't know, never really sat for long in any other).
