June 13, 200619 yr I need to haul it away on a car trailer that you can drive the car up on but, 2 tires are flat on it. Do you guys think if I had 3 guys pushing we can get it up the ramps and on to the trailer? The tires are dry rotted and not sure if they will hold air or not. Any suggestions?? Where can sheetmetal for the hatch be bought for cheap?
June 13, 200619 yr on the tires.... see if they will hold air. if not, do you have spares (assuming that you do not, based on your post..) try fix-a-flat or "SLIME" and then see if they will hold air. moving a car with flat tires by hand sucks will the car start, run, drive? if it will drive, it might drive onto the trailer fine, but it's definitely bad for the rims if the tires are flat
June 13, 200619 yr Author Well, i ahvent gotten a cahnce to try to get it started yet. Its been sitting for a long time. I dont know if it will start even with a jump and starting fluid.
June 13, 200619 yr How about using a come-a-long and slowly pulling it up on the trailer? or you could bring a fresh battery and just drive it on the Starter Motor! Filling up any tires that will hold air would be a plus! Don't forget to check the spare? That may help. Do you have a set of wheels you could borrow?
June 13, 200619 yr Author Well the spare is in the hood. I plan on using that. I ahve one wheel from my old hatch, but theres a nail in it, but i guess i can use slime in there and pump it. Wheres the best place to jack on kind of a rusted hatch? well I dont know if it will start..I would bring a fresh battery. What suggestions do you guys have on getting a car running that ahsnt been run in a couple years
June 13, 200619 yr well I dont know if it will start..I would bring a fresh battery. What suggestions do you guys have on getting a car running that ahsnt been run in a couple years my 1970 mustang started after 15 years with just some starter fluid in the carb, some fresh gas, and a jumpstart.... but who knows
June 13, 200619 yr airing up the tires will help just about anyway you load it. have a good battery and jumper cables if the battery in the car is questionable. run those to the starter (or battery cables if they are present and good). if it's a manual transmission vehicle you can put it in gear, take the emergency brake off and use the starter to move the vehicle. this works great. if that doesn't work use a good quality come-a-long to ratchet it along. done it plenty of times loading a car onto my dolly. very easy and doesn't take long at all. this will work every time.
June 13, 200619 yr Author Hmm ill try allthese just to be safe haha Would this come along work? http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=30329
June 13, 200619 yr it will work, but i'd suggest better quality. i'd wear safety goggles when using it. pay particular attention to the center bolt and nut that the cable holder rotates on. these comes loose very easily and very quickly. i'd tighten it before every use. they are cheap for a reason but they do work. like i said, wear safety goggles please it's not worth it. when that cheap thing is under a couple thousand pounds of tension you don't want to take chances being only a couple feet from it (or let your friends do it and tell them you have to "steer"...just kidding). i'd be particularly worried if it's burried, flat tires and will require alot of force to roll...but again it will work. ask some friends....farmers always have good come along they'll let you borrow. i've used come-a-longs plenty of times, they work great. they also work nicely for pulling some bumpers, body panels, etc if you need to straighten things out.
June 13, 200619 yr Author Awesome, I will probably get one of these. The car isnt really buried perse, but the tires are falt. Its on flat paved ground. Im kind of worried about jacking it because of some of the rust that is on it. Whered the best place to jack it in the front to avoid damage?

Whered the best place to jack it in the front to avoid damage? not sure if the hatches have these.. but there should be a jacking plate in the front kinda in the center of the car
June 13, 200619 yr I once used a chain hoist sideways to load my car on a flatbed. Had to raise the front of the trailer up to get the exhaust to clear the edge of the trailer, but that was the station wagon. A hatch might be able to clear it no problem.
June 13, 200619 yr once you have one of those come alongs come apart on you, you'll realize what kind of dangerous tool they are:eek: i was winching a ford festiva up a hill once with one, and the pully holding the cable ripped off and smacked me in the chest, and lets just say that was not pleasant;) not to mention losing the car and wiping out your mother's fence... its up to you, they do rarely brake, so your odds are low, especially on flat pavement. pushing it would also be a pain because you can`t get momentum to good with flat tires. your best bet is to take the few minutes and try to get it running. even if its spitting and sputtering on 2 cylinders, and has 4 flats, you could still inch it up on the trailer in 4 lo. the best place to jack is right on the rails underneath, they are by far the strongest part of the unibody, as long as they are not rusted threw or are soft from rust. to jack up the back, just get a floor jack, and position it under the center pumpkin to lift both wheels at once.......
June 13, 200619 yr Author Oh man Jon getting hit in the chest must of been a huge surprise! 1ST I think im going to try to get it started with a fresh battery and see what kind of luck that brings me. 2ND Ill try to fill the tires up with air and see if they hold any 3rd Jack it, put the spare and other hatch wheel I have and push if any of the other triess dont work Haha seems more trouble than its worth
June 14, 200619 yr its too bad you don`t live closer, i could hook you up with some steely wheels with good meats on them pretty cheap. when you first try to get it running, take the breather cover off with the 3 wing nuts, and spray the starting fluid right down into the primary chamber, then hold the gas to the floor to engage the choke. if everything else is up and up, i bet it`ll start well enough to pull up on the trailer.
June 14, 200619 yr Author Ok man ill try to do that and hope to hell it works haha If I had enough time Id come up and get them, but I may wanna get em off your hands soon anyway man.
June 14, 200619 yr for simply rolling a car up on a trailer a come a long will work fine. driving up on the starter motor sounds like fun...
June 14, 200619 yr yeah, plus you`ll have to pick up this fender or wait till july when i`ll hopefully be going to that meet......
June 14, 200619 yr and if all else fails have a buddy sit on the motor and spray starting fluid in the carb (i did that with my buddy's car to get it up a hill to a flat bed but it was efi so that was a little bit weired compared to just taking the top off the air cleaner and spraying it directly into the carb) it's not very safe but it gets the job done and the motor pings like hell
June 14, 200619 yr you better get to work man!!!!have your neigbor look at the rust asap so you can see what has to be done for inspection. maybe chris could sell you a drivers fender off his tan hatch?
June 14, 200619 yr I always had to jack my Hatch on a suspension part (A arm or rear trailing arm). Everywhere else was just too rusty. Last thing you what to do is put the jack through the metal into the car. Don't jack it on the recomemded jacking points on the rocker panels. They just won't hold up anymore. I think this will be easier than your thinking...
June 14, 200619 yr Author Yeah sweet, I am going to jack it on these parts just to be safe. Im not going to have time to get it today or tomorrow, Im going to get it as soon as I get out of work on friday afternoon.
