wheel bearing help

Featured Replies

i put some new bearings and seals on the front drivers side today, i packed the bearings did everything right atleast i think. then when i went to test drive it made this sqeeking sound when i would accelerate fast from a stop or when i would slow way down. if the brakes are on at all it goes away. the sqeek does not sound like metal or metalic so i think maybe the seals may not be in all the way and is rubbing on the cv. if so could ths be bad? or could i live with it. thanks

not sure... when you changed your bearings how did your brake pads look? some pads will have a little metal peice on them that makes a whole bunch of noise when the brakes arent being applied.

ok i will check that but i already kinda looked and they are relativley new pads.

while you were doing the work did the rotors get any bit of rust on them?

if it goes away when you apply the brakes it sounds like pad/rotor issues.

how tight did you make the axle nuts?

if they are 'loose' (relative term), they can cause all sorts of weird sounds.

They should be 145 ft/lbs, IIRC

Yeah, check the castle nut on the end of the CV to make sure its tight. I usually stand on my breaker bar to torque them.

Hi All,

I have a similar problem. I get a squeeking/whistleing noise when going straight or turning left. Its like when the wheel reaches a certain point in rotation it gives a split second sound and as I increase speed (rotation) so too does the noise to the point that it almost becomes continous. No noise when turning right.

I had 2 new tires of same spec fitted on front recently & only really noticed noise since then.

Any suggestions its a 04 Impreza WRX AWD.

I'd put money on the backing plate/dust shield, that always gets me, and i used to do brakes for a living.

Had the same thing happen to me on my last change out and it ended up to also be the dust shield.

+3 for check the dust shield. They like to get pushed into the rotor during brake work

Also be SURE the "spring washer" is on correct, it has a marking that says "out" .
