EA-81 Axle Help

Featured Replies

just picked up an '82 DL 4wd waggon w/ 180k, little body rust but motor is in great shape.

Anyway I'm getting a pretty gnarly clicking from the front drivers side wheel mostly when decelerating and turning right (when all the weight is on that wheel). I noticed the washer behind the castle nut had some play in it, so i bought the socket and tried to suck it up (hoping to make it last long enough) to get it apart and check out the bearings. Put about a half a turn on it put in new cotter pin and drove it home. Apparently when i tightened it I loosened the rust that was holding it together, because when i got home and checked it out the nut had sheered the pin and slid straight out when i pulled the nut it was obvious that a former owner had cross-threaded the nut all the way on (how dumb you gotta be to do that):drunk: . the nut was totally shot but most of the threads on the axle look alright, so i tried a new nut but no luck new nut is toast, but it doesn't look like it did any more damage to the axle.

So my question is this, how hard is it to swap axle, what special tools do I need? The book I have says it needs to be pressed together w/ a press. Is this true? The other possibility is trying to fix the threads is there someone near Reno with the correct die?

Please help :banghead:

croak

There are a few members in the Reno area - but the ones I know of are at the show right now.

You should do a search on here for "axle replacement". You'll get all the info you need. They are relatively easy to do.

Whats the deal w/ the DURALAST axles, has anyone used them are they any good???

So far, the best axles I've come up with are the GCK axles. Order them from autozone for $100 each no core charge.

After using these, I no longer trust ANY rebuilt axle. I don't care who did it.

the auto zone here says they can't get the GCK axles and they said the duralast are NEW axles not reman. Kragen can get the GCK but they want $40 core

That's BS - find another autozone. SubaruJunkie just bought some a few weeks ago, and I bought one no more than 4 months past....

I wouldn't touch some "duralast" crap. A board member at the show was on his 2nd "duralast" alternator, and it was already making horrible electronic squeal - only 2 days old.

I would ask them what the core charge is for... that makes no sense because GCK certainly doesn't want it back. What are they doing with your core?

HOLY %$#@, just called dealer to see what they want for axle, $245 WTF

I got my axels at NAPA. You mey fret, but at $80 a pop with a life time warrenty...I don't see how I could beat that. Any time it breaks I bring it in and get anew one for free :).

As far as replacing an axle? Man there are like 100 threads on that. Do a search, it's one of the more common topics.

Absolutly 100%. I've had mine on my hatch for about three years now. Best $112 I ever spent on my car:burnout:

Later, Tim
