Tricks on Pulling a tierod

Hi all,

I am replacing the inner tierod as it was broken in an accident. I have to pull the outer tierod out and I am wondering if anyone has any tricks? Will I need a fork or can I lever or hammer it out?

definately try what GD said. the fork tool almost always rips the boot. smack it right on the knuckle. resist the temptation to wack it from the top.

Use a block of wood with the hammer so you don't mess up the threads. Works pretty well.

I thread the nut on so that it protects the threads (just even with the top of the bolt threads), and then smack it with a copper hammer (I don't like brass except for drifts as it will shatter). This gives a nice dead blow, the copper deforms instead of the threads, and the added surface area of the nut and the bolt top keeps it from getting bunged up.

that is what I thought I would do. adding wood is a good addition if the wood still transnsmitts the power from the hammer instead of absorbing the energy.

I assume replacement of the end can be done by simply tightening the bolt down?

providing you have the right end, yes. i had parts store difficulties :rolleyes:

I remove the nut , then smack the arm its bolted to not the ball joint threaded part, what this does is causes the tapered hole in the arm to flex a bit and the ball joint will fall out

an option....steering racks are a dime a dozen as well, might want to play with a used one and install new tie rods and then install it to the car (easier to work on and less down time). or just install a new steering rack, they're easy and cheap.
