Rear hatch washer doesn't work.

I am trying to keep the individual problems to their own threads here, so here is the next one. Minor enough, but I am trying to fix it all even if just to learn my way around a Subie.

 

I have an 88 GL Wagon. The rear hatch window washer doesn't squirt. I can hear the pump run and there is enough water in the reservoir. (Now that I finally found it. :) )

 

I poked the outlet nozzle with a pin to see if there was a blockage in the nozzle and that didn't help. I am thinking about just replacing the hose next.

 

Any other ideas before I go that far?

I have the same problem in an EA81 (never got around to fixing it, prob. won't)

 

I would suggest that you you try to clear out the clog w/ pressurized air.

I had the exact same problem with the rear washer on my 85 wagon ever since I got it a couple years ago. Never did figure it out. Kept thinking I'd get around to it eventually. Guess it doesn't matter anymore though as the freakn wiper quit on me last month. I give up.

i would not use air as this will probably separate the hose from the pump if the hose is not already disconnected.

 

when you run the washer pump see if there is fluid coming out of the corner of the car, this would indicate a loose connection at the pump or at the connector in the middle of the hose. assuming of course that they didn't change the system from 86 to 88.

Hmm, interesting idea. I hadn't noticed if does that or not. I'll look, thanks.

 

I think I may see if I can pop the interior panel off the hatch and either replace the whole hose system or at least disconnect it from the pump side and blow it out toward the nozzle to see if any air comes out.

I think I had the same problem in my 88 GL a few years back.

 

You should be able to pop the squirter off the hatch, and make sure it's hooked up to the hose inside. I don't think mine was (somehow).

I'd bet it's cracked tubing.

Be careful the plastic gets brittle, don't break any fittings...

That was my exact problem with my 88 DL, i know whats wrong, have i fixed it? nope.

I am going to try and take a swing at this problem this weekend, along with the others I posted about. I'll post back my results. Thanks for the ideas guys.

Finally, a problem that I know how to fix. The hose has a check valve in line. Mine had rusted shut. Pull the hose at the valve, and use a puch or other suitable item to move the ball in the valve, that is what I did and now mine works fine.

ive read this whole thread thinking that there was nothing THAT complex in this system to go wrong, what could be the big deal??

 

Apparently, there IS. a Check valve.. :lol: figures though.

Yeah, I wasn't going to post this originally, but then I realized that something might come up even with an apparently simple system like this. I wouldn't even have thought to look for a check valve. :-p
