factory 5-speeds in EA81?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever heard of an EA81 car coming from the factory with a 5-speed dual range?

My coworker had an '84 GL wagon which he purchased with 15k on it a while ago, and he says it had a 5-speed in it. He is not one to mistake a 4-speed for a 5-speed under any circumstances, and he knows an EA81 car from an EA82 car.

Any thoughts??

As an aside, they can be made to look 100% stock. You can't tell my Brat has a 5 speed at all.

The biggest reason they didn't get them has to do with the need to redesign the floor pan sheel metal and the transmission tunnel to accept the two-peice driveline. And I think it may need a slight change in the exhaust as well.

Your right on this plus also the need to use up all the existing 4 speed parts due to the fact a new model was being developed and the flywheel/clutch thing, (different), plus a few other reasons l can't remember.

All Aus brumby's came as 4wd d/r, we got no auto's or fwd models or 5 speeds, the ones here were all done after purchase.

These aren't EA82s (aka L Series) GD - they are EA81s or MYs.

But in any case, they are not common by any means - and GD is very probably correct in saying they didnt hit US shores officially. I think using an EA82 5 Speed is a lot more highly desirable for EA81 owners anyways.

Yeah - if you want to talk about non-US models, then I'm sure you could find an EA82 body with an EA81 or EA71 in front of the 5 speed D/R.... but I don't know for sure. I've seen EA82 coupe's with EA71's and 2WD 5 speeds.....

Yep, saw heaps of EA-81 engined EA-82 bodied 5 speed dual range Subaru's, (boy l bet you can't say that quick!), some 1600's too in Israel on a recent visit, can't recall seeing to many in Aus though but thats not to say they were never here.

It's just weird. He got the car with under 20,000 miles on it from the original owner and he says they didn't work on it. I'll confirm whether it was 4WD or 2WD with him...

It's possible he's wrong but he's not one to make such a mistake.. Like most people I know could say "it had a 5-speed" and I'd just smile and nod. When Sean says "it had a 5-speed" I start checking my own facts. ;)
