It died in the water

Featured Replies

So I went driving on a not road surface today. It got pretty crazy in some parts, narrow, rutted, deeper ruts, high centering but going to fast to be stoped, turn after turn, mud, etc..... Well I came to a spot where the water was prolly up to the top of the bumper so I floored it. I was close enough to not get a whole bunch of momentum, actually I prolly didnt even gain any momentum by the time I dove in. The car died, full gas and it just stopped. No revs, no spinning, just a sudden drop in rpm. I thought it stalled, but it didn't. After a few seconds I threw it back into first and proceded to get out. So what do you guys think?? Oh, another thing...when I got back to the road I floored it, it was going good then it was a sudden jerk - loss of power....so what gives?? This only happens when wet, I noticed this after once before when I went through a deep puddle (on road).

Check your air filter, if its wet, your engine is probably too. ( the inside, not the ok side )

If it still runs, do a compression check. if there not even you may have bent a rod.

Ignition stuffs may have gotten wet. Check all your plugs and wires, etc. The EJ's tend to bend rods or break pistons when they get sunk in water like that. Get yourself a snorkel if you plan to do this a lot. And change your oil - water contamination is pretty sinister on the lube system.

it does it all the time when it rains?

my moms boyfriend was working on a customers car for almost 2 weeks (even drove it home couple of nights trying to find out what was going on)

every time they came to his shop it was fine and showed no codes

turned out when it rained the map senser would freak out telling the computer lies

dont rember what caused it but i think it was a tare in the freash air line

probley not your case but i thought i would share this crazy case

for future reference, don't floor it when going through water. it just splashes more water around, and causes the engine to suck more air (and potentially water). smooth, slow, and steady is the way to go.

I'd bet on wet electrical connections. these motors are completely electronically controlled....if it gets a goofy signal from anything, it won't run quite right.

Brings up a good point, check all your electrical connections to make sure that they are clean and dry.

ok.. this is EXACTLY what happens. If you spray water on your MAF sensor the engine shuts down. if you spray less water on it, if gets bogged down with a loss of power.

there you go. your MAF got wet.

sweet thanks for the direct answer. Sealing up the little area where the water can still pass by the snorkel very soon.

So I changed the diff and motor oil and they seem to be fine. Do you guys think I am in trouble??

no, just be careful not to let ANY opening on your intake get wet.

seal it up nice and tight and you'll be good to go.
