Axle help. XT6 5 lug to EA81 tranny

Featured Replies

Ok, I have done some research and I am trying to get something straight before I start ripping apart axles.

I did a 5 lug swap on my BRAT. I put in the EA82 crossmember, control arms, and XT6 hubs. I have my 4spd D/R BRAT tranny.

1) Does anyone know what the spline count of a XT6 axle is?

2) IIRC the spline count for a non-turbo EA82 is the same as the BRAT's. So if the spline count on the above it not the same as the BRAT's could I just swap DOJ cups from a non-turbo car to make it work?

3) Does anyone know if I can take an EJ axle and replace the entire DOJ joint to make it work?

Thanks

BW

I used the EJ hubs, and the EJ FWD axles, and that worked for me, they seem a bit long, so i'm running into problems there, but they fit outboard and inboard.

Length should not be that bad b/c I am running it with a lift.

Will legacy 2wd axles work?

BW

they will as lng as you use the legacy hubs on the front of it, otherwise the spline count of the xt6 is 25 to the ea81's 23, i'm having the oposite problem with my swap, the fwd legacy has 23 spline, fitting your ea81 trans, i am not sure of the doj sizes, i know the legacy 25 spline wouldn't fit my 4wd ea axle due to the awd ea being biggerif you have some spare xt6 axles just pull the boot off the doj side, there is a retaining ring in there use a flat head screw driver and pop it off and do the same with your stock ea and see if it will fit, it'll at least give you something to go by

RE using the EJ hubs. I already have the XT6 hubs in place.

I test fitted an axle from my Impreza AWD and the outer side worked, but the inner side is too big. So if I can find an axle that has the 23 spline DOJ cup, it should work right? I mean the hubs are al the same right?

BW

You have to make custom axles - Legacy/Imp/XT6 axles are too long. You have to cut the shaft and weld on the inner portion of an EA81/EA82 axle with some tubing as a sleeve for strength.

you need the 2WD legacy or impreza axles, they are the only 23 spline ej axles you will find,

correction, FWD legacies still had 25 splines.

ONLY FWD IMPREZA axles have 23 splines.

so just to verify....

EA81 chassis, EA82 Crossmember, EA81 4spd d/r tranny, XT6 control arms and radius rod will work with Imp FWD axles.

yeah, tat'll make up for the axle length differece, the extra length will suit it nicely
