January 28, 200719 yr hey guys, im the proud owner of a damn near MINT '86 GL coupe now. (BTW Jon it is FI, not Carb'd) i have this odd thingie under the hood thats wired up with jumpers... the connectors dont match its that black thing with the round "knob" on it. you can barely see it in this pic... but what IS that thing? Betcha it's throwing my ECS light... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/medium/IMAGE_00028.jpg (i FORGOT that html code) And also, I bought: Fram fuel filter, Fram PCV valve, Fram air filter, NGK V-Power spark plugs, Borg Warner plug wires, and a distributor cap and rotor. What am I missing? Isnt there some **** im supposed to be cleaning, like the TB and/or IAC? What are those things I clean? I have carb cleaner ready to use I dont care if it's a 3AT and revs higher to all living hell, and might be as old as ME... but I tell you, I feel more safe, and I'm more confident that I'll get to my destinations now... I missed my little EA82 sedan, this sure fulfilled what I was missing I just got rid of my old car which scared me so much: '95 Ford Escort LX with 94k and an out of whack well... everything. When an airbag pops in your face for NO reason, time to run! GAH!
January 28, 200719 yr sorry gonna need a better pic. cant see anything odd in that pic -=Suberdave=- http://www.suberdave.com
January 28, 200719 yr Author Argh... impossible.. my camera is garbage. It's a 2-wire connector... has a "knob" on it...
January 28, 200719 yr Author Yeah, I own two (soon to be three) of them, the XT6 might be going bye-bye soon.. I can't finish it the way I want without breaking the bank.. good 'lil fast ER27 though Knowing I have a Subaru in my driveway makes me feel happy. And pretty comfy. I think I'm an addict. My mom thinks I'm insane. So do half of my friends. I drove the coupe to Las Vegas the night I bought the car (for $125 and a quickie oil change with MMO)... My friends car's are being financed and none of them made it on our voyage (all of them had a hold-up on I-15, except me ) So who cares what they say... Subaru FTW
January 28, 200719 yr i have this odd thingie under the hood thats wired up with jumpers... the connectors dont match its that black thing with the round "knob" on it. Could you be talking about the EGR solenoid? Behind the thermostat housing. Under the intake air duct. What code are you getting?
January 28, 200719 yr Could you be talking about the EGR solenoid? Behind the thermostat housing. Under the intake air duct. What code are you getting? I do believe that he is referring to the EGR solenoid and it quite possible that the solenoid is a source of codes to make the check engine light come on. Very hard to see the solenoid....put a flashlight right on it when you take the pic so we'll be able to see it and be able to tell you for sure.
January 28, 200719 yr Author i think its the EGR also... im gonna check the ECU codes tomorrow morning, and if i cant figure it out, ill try to take a better picture. i had a lot of trouble getting the front spark plug out (cylinder 1) and it looks like cylinder 1's spark plug is sticking out more than cylinder 3. is it supposed to look like that??
January 28, 200719 yr Drop to your knees and offer Thanks towards The Heavens if it's not Code=34 ...
January 28, 200719 yr Author If it is a code 34, i'll drop to my knees, pray, then put a blocking plate on the EGR.
January 28, 200719 yr I am sorry Misled, but you have been misled. Blocking off the EGR port will not fix your problem, if the EGR solenoid is to blame for the CEL. Operative word - solenoid. If it shows thirty four - no need to panic. These are readily available at any boneyard as late 80's Hondas and 'Yotas all have them. I am corn fused by all the hoop -la over this solenoid. (or the purge control solenoid for that matter) FHI's choice for the OEM solenoid was not the best but Honda and Toyota got it right. I have replaced many over my years. You may need to cut and splice the connector but it's bench work. A lot easier than fabin' a block off plate and gasket. If you go bone-yardin' for one look at the firewall in some Hondas - a large black plastic box has three or four in it. Hope this helps, nice score sure looks clean. As for the spark plug issue, no they should all be the same. Sounds like you may have some bad threads. It must seat on the head to seal. A helicoil may be needed.
January 28, 200719 yr If it is a code 34, i'll drop to my knees, pray, then put a blocking plate on the EGR. Yep ... but don't forget the electrical tape for the dash light ...
January 29, 200719 yr Author Looks like the EGR solenoid has already been spliced and replaced with a different one... The spark plug issue... it was REALLY difficult to get the old one out... i got some ngk v-power plugs... the washer looks like its on the block BUT... cylinder 1 still looks higher than cylinder 3... i'm starting to think thats just how it is... funny thing is, i havent had a CEL in over 2 days now haha
January 30, 200719 yr Author EGR problem... gone. replaced with a boneyard unit. cleared codes... everything ECS light related is gone, i guess.. the spark plug is fine. it was difficult to get out and in, nonetheless, it seems like it's in there good enough... ill pay the $$$ if i do have to have it retapped... highly doubt it though now we gots another problem... my car idles like crap. i pump the brake pedal, it lowers and makes the idle worse... im thinking the brake booster, but i dont wanna say im 100% sure and is there a remedy for the 3at's hard shifting when cold? and the tranny dipstick "pops out" of the hole... my last 3at did this... WHY?
January 31, 200719 yr and is there a remedy for the 3at's hard shifting when cold? and the tranny dipstick "pops out" of the hole... my last 3at did this... WHY? I've been running 3ATs since about 1990. In CT. Amsoil synthetic ATF helped the cold shifting considerably. Another thing I've noticed, is that aftermarket vacume modulators seem to shift differently than oem.
