February 12, 200719 yr OK. After switching out 3 different D/R 4spds and still having no 3rd gear, I've given up getting my parts car driving and will be yanking the engine out of it and putting it into my Brat. My only concern is the fact that I live in CA and have to smog it:( . I've never swapped an engine on a car needing smog so this will be a first. The engine is from a Nevada car and runs good. BUT, does it have the necessary goodies (engine parts wise) to put into a CA Brat w/ the necessary smog crap? My main concern is having to tear down a good running motor to add the necessary parts. Does everything that's not included on the Nevada engine bolt up w/o having to teardown my engine? Sorry for the stupid questions but, as I said, never had to deal w/ smog before on engine swapping. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
February 13, 200719 yr You should'nt have to tear down the engine to add stuff. the pulse air system should bolt right up to the back of the heads and I think the EGR is the same. the smog pump should have a bracket to see where it bolts to on your cali motor. if there's anything iam missing then tell me. I think thats all. But smog is overratted dude. ************em. pass your test then take it all off. Where running all smog discoed. to hell with that Bull************. keep us posted. Soobs rock teh noobs.
February 13, 200719 yr Ive had a non-CA emissions Subaru pass the CA smog test. just make sure it runs real well, my GL failed due to the idle being 100rpm high
February 13, 200719 yr Author I live in Amador County. 44 miles SE of Sacramento. Savage- I DEFINATELY second ditching the smog setup after the test, but I have to pass the test first to drive it legally on the street
February 13, 200719 yr well, i know of a couple of places up here where i live that will pass it no matter what, so if you cant get it to pass, let me know
February 13, 200719 yr I don't know what the exact procedure is for registering with *newer* equipment, but I know it's possible. The Impreza crowd do it all the time. Check into it, then just dump the carb setup and install SPFI on the engine instead. Should pass no trouble at all then. GD
