taillight woes

Featured Replies

I have a 92 legacy wagon and the tail lights aren't working. In fact, none of the running lights work. Even further, the left side front turn signal is out and even when I changed the bulb, the other was bad, it didn't work. The switch above the steering column won't turn anything on. I DO have brake lights and my dash lights up. I have checked all the basics, fuses, relay, bulbs and still nothing. What else can I check? For what its worth, I have always left the running lights on. I also swapped out the rear hatch but the other musta been from a earlier/later model cause not all the wires matched. I don't have a rear defrost and the lock doesn't work which I don't care about, just the tail lights but I thought I'd mention it anyways. I did check my connections there and everything looked fine. Thanks for any help.

well get the meter out and see if you even have power at the fuse block.

The circuit goes from the fuse block then divides to the parking light relay, and to the "park" light switch.

Another possability is that you have bad grounds.

The bad light I would suspect a bad socket.

ahhh bloody hell, I thought someone might say that. Don't have a meter but will borrow a friends and see what I can find. Just figured there was THAT switch I could have replaced. Thanks.

are you aware the main fuse for the lights in question is not in the fuse box under the dash,

but in the main fuse box under the hood?

fuse #23 20 amp

in the last couple of weeks i've read a few classifides , in other places, that talked about rear lights being "straight wired". it made me think that there might be a bad switch or relay. but the meter will lead the way.

good luck and let us know what you find.

Yep, checked that. If I'm not mistaken that also controls the dash lights?

Thanks. I hoped it to be a relay too all the fuses were good. We'll see what the meter says and hopefully I can track this down.

but the "switch" bypasses the relay. So you may have a problem at the block.

i have the same problem with my 90 wagon....no rear running lights....wtf?

if you have fixed let me know what you did otherwise any more advice?

:Flame:

uh.... there is a switch on the top of the steering column.

yeah yah:headbang:

To Legacy92_wagon:

The problem may be due to a bad connection in the connector under the dash. My info shows power should be on a red wire going to a 21 pin connector under the dash left of the steering column. If power is okay there then the switch may be the trouble.

To Coroboto:

Check the connector under the on the passenger side near the wheel wheel. There is a connector that has two rows of 4 pins each. A red/blue wire supplies power to the rear lights.

Note: This info is from my '88 manual. Hopefully it is the same for your model years.
