about to buy a svx, questions to svx owners

Featured Replies

so I'm going out to look at a svx and was wondering what to look out for.

the guy said he installed a alt and it blew or something and wires may need to be replaced. otherwise is sounds like a good car. any info on these would be nice. looking for info about your experiences with a svx.

Three words

Transmission

Transmission

Transmission.

Do not buy one thats not running, since you REALLY need to test drive the car. The AWD SVX's have transmission issues. They easily overheat. The two common fixes are to install a legacy tranny or install a manual. If the tranny seems the slightest bit odd in how it shifts, its a sign of impending doom. It cant just be fixed with a flush.

If the tranny is original have an tranny oil cooler and a filter added. the filter should be changed frequently.

Other things:

Rear LSD

Rear Wheel Bearings

Very expensive windsheild.

Engine seems to run forever. i would like one myself.

I am over there and so is Hocrest, though he doesn't post much here anymore.

Like nipper said TRANNY IS THE KEY

you might also want to start hoarding parts b/c there were only 15,000 of them some in the US and they are getting rare. Luckly most of the parts are interchangeable w/other EJ cars. I have owned mine for over a year now and had not hand any major problems.

In terms of the replacement tranny, a local subaru Guru who works for a Sooby rally team said that I should replace the tranny w/a JDM WRX tranny, not the STI one or the RA geared one. The JDM WRX tranny will work well with the EG33's torque.

So this is why my ears were ringing...

Toro, I saw your post over on SVX.net. When I saw that you also had a lifted wagon, I figured you were over here too :)

Don't be nervous there are lot of Subaru out there with parts that will bolt right up to the SVX, turbo's, 5/6 speeds, big brakes and a whole bunch of other things, if you just read the Subaru sites.

And in most cases the Legacy parts that bolt up to them are far better then the original SVX parts.
