I ASK THIS BECAUSE I'VE GOT AN 82 BRAT AND AT 70 MPH I'M TURNING 4000 RPM THATS WITH 185/80/13. WHILE MY BUDDY HAS AN 85 HATCH AND 175/70/13S AND HE DONT TURN THAT MANY RPMS. December 5, 200322 yr the different rpm could be attributed to the difference in wheel size, but as a genaral rule, if the car is a manual its 3.9 and if its an auto or turbo its 3.7 rear axle ratio.
December 6, 200322 yr I believe there were two different 4-speeds used in the EA81 series. The earlier models had a 4th gear that was geared lower (more RPM at a given speed). I think it was in the 1983 and later EA81's that the 4th gear was a lot "taller" than before, giving less RPM.
December 6, 200322 yr Actually - 3rd and 4th are different. And yes - the 82 4 speed's have the shorter gearing. It's great for off-road when you lift and put on big tires. GD
December 6, 200322 yr Yup, when I thrashed the 4spd in my Brat (82) I replaced it with one from an 84, serious difference in the top speed, 82= 65@like 4K 84=65@3.6K. As far as I can rember of course, your results may vary. I almost never use the top 2 gears offroad, so it wasn't a problem.
