FAILED emissions test

Recommended Posts

1982 brat, no engine leaks, carter weber carb. new exaust with new cat. 1.75in to cat flange, 2 inches back.

i had really high hopes for this to pass smog. he popped the hood and noticed that i was missing that hose that connects to the little turtle box. so he falied me for that, he did the emissions test anyways and it failed that too...

dammit dude what do i got to do to make this pass smog?!

it should do great...oh yeah i failed by alot too.

i here that if u run your car down to a gallon or less and put in about a quart of rubbing alcohol in the tank with the one gallon it will burn cleaner. (for smog testing)

Make sure you get the highest percentage you can find. Highest I've seen is 97% at Kmart and the like.

NONONONOONONO!! NOT Isopropyl Rubbing alcohol, Denatured alcohol used as paint thinner sold at home depot.

Two TOTALLY different chemicals. "Alcohol" isn't a chemical formula, is a family of substances.

However, Alcohol IS the best solution to this problem. (solution, what a pun, har har) A gallon or two down the hatch (so to speak) should have you batting at an acceptable average.

It may not take a big dose, depending on how far out of required range it is. This could be part of the reason the PO hadn't had it registered for a while.

Daeron, thanks for clearing that up. I didn't know the difference mattered for emissions testing. Now for a little down the hatch...

there is no tricking the machine.. the alcohol burns that much cleaner, in regards to smog gasses...

sounds like NOx numbers?? its been years since I had emissions testing to think about (and West Palm Beach is second only to Honolulu for "metropolitan area" in the US with the cleanest air ) anyhow, if memory serves, the number that was x.x... on our van went from like 5, 6 ish (bad flunk, our limit was i think 2?) to zero, and the CO ppm went from like 400 (just barely passing) to like 120.

drive around with gallon of gas, and gallon of alcohol, until you run totally dry. Get out, put enough gas in to get you home. Get home, pour in the gallon of alcohol. (provided you live less than ~20 miles from inspection station )

Before you go to the test, go on a good, long, hard, hot drive. Avoid fifth, if its a stick. avoid fourth, if you have to. I am just saying, good hot run. Go for the test. Pass with flying colors. Get out, pour the rest of that can of gas in to get you to a station, put in maybe half a tank, and just to be on the safe side, run that mostly dry before filling up.

The only, ONLY "problem" with running pure denatured alcohol on a USDM vehicle is long term rubber dissolution issues, and that takes weeks of constant exposure to straight alcohol.

Almost certainly what your problem is. You can go to an emmissions specialist, pay 150 bones, get a waiver.

Or you can go find a Weber 32/36 for about 3 bills, hook it up properly, pass emmissions and have a better running more powerful brat.

you can get a waiver for a poopy carb?

i dont mean to sound smart or anything but one of the reasons he failed me was visual inspection, i was missing a vaccum hose, and if i have to plug off all the emission hoses its #1 not gonna pass visual and #2 most likely fail the test because of the emissions system not properly working.

id like to here more tho if you got more

D - You should have a vacuum chart under your hood for your carby. Get all of those lines hooked up and would solve problem one. It may also solve problem 2 b/c then your emissions system would be working right.

good luck with everything :)

He has a Carter Weber...

Like Zap said, try to get a waiver if you can, i've never heard of it myself... maybe pop a good Hitachi on it until you pass the test, or just find some other way to screw the system (I registered my car out of state)

I'm prtty sure the carter weber has a different intake manifold. So he'd have to swap that out as well.

there is no vacuum diagram under the hood, and unless i can find a hitachi setup for free or cheap, i dont think thats happening either, and yes you do need the different intake manifold.

i want to register it in a diff. county but my parents like to do everything by the book.(which sucks)

carter-weber does have a different intake than hitachi..i kno cause i swapped from carter-weber to hitachi then to just plain weber :). Now since its a feedback carb does that mean you have an O2 sensor on that exhaust? If so that could be screwing up your emissions test along with the unhooked vacuum lines and "turtle" thingy. I assume that turtle thingy is the silencer for the ASV valves. I have two good ones that i could sell you dirt cheap if you need new turtles (silencers).

i would have to think that the little hose to the O2 sensor os missing cuz i didnt even have one....and when i went to the junkyard to go pick up the hoses i noticed that one i pulled was cominmg from the exaust....now i dont think there is any little sensor to the exaust for that hose to even plug to, that could mess everything up...i was looking at the vacuum lines and stuff for the hitachi and that looks scary to swap over...

I have a hitachi intake manifold set up. You still need the carby but pay for shipping and it's yours.
