August 18, 200718 yr Hi. Anyone know if the main 100 amp fuse (2000 Outback wagon) is a dealer only item? Or can I get it at parts america or autozone or even napa? Ideally I need to get one tomorrow (Sunday) and my local dealers are closed, and the aforementioned vendor web sites are useless in finding this fuse. Thanks! zzz
August 18, 200718 yr Try the auto parts stores, as its a standard fuse. How did you manage to blow the main fuse? nipper
August 18, 200718 yr Author Thanks nipper. I thought I saw fuses like this at the chain stores before but I wasn't sure. How did you manage to blow the main fuse? mm..well hehe, you remember that alternator thread about making sure the grounds were good and alternator connections were good? Well it turns out my alternator + connection and alternator ground are both pretty good..... just not when they're touched together with a screwdriver.
August 18, 200718 yr Author Here's a couple pictures that led up to blowing the main fuse...thank God for the main fuse!
August 18, 200718 yr Author Also note that liquid tape is highly flammable.....but it does make it harden faster.
August 19, 200718 yr Author lol yes it was. Actually the flame happened when I was using a lighter to shrink the heat shrink tubing, which had the liquid tape underneath. Apparentley it turns out their flammable warning on the liquid tape can is indeed a warning and not a dare.
August 19, 200718 yr SO you blew the main fuse AND needed a fire extinguisher thats a double point score nipper
August 19, 200718 yr Author lol yes all in all I'd say it was a successful day! The real test will be seeing if replacing the main fuse makes the car work again.... else I'll be saying "it seemed like a good idea at the time..."
August 19, 200718 yr lol yes all in all I'd say it was a successful day! The real test will be seeing if replacing the main fuse makes the car work again.... and all i get to blow up are those mudder ruckin illumination controllers. (I have dash lights again but no dimmer) nipper
August 19, 200718 yr Author (I have dash lights again but no dimmer)I could take a look at if you want...
August 20, 200718 yr Author OK, got the new 100 amp main fuse put in. I went to autozone, parts america, and carquest, but the largest fuse they had in this style was 80 amp. Parts america did have a similar 100 amp fuse, but it had straight legs, not legs bent at 90 degrees like the Subaru fuse. So I got this fuse from parts america and bent the legs carefully with needlenose pliers. Then during installation I was careful not to let any of the tools touch the body...
August 20, 200718 yr Keep the fuse in mind if you ever visit a wrecking yard. I've pulled hundreds of fuses in the past and stored them in my garage, just in case. They are small enough to put in your pocket or a compartment of your toolbox.
August 20, 200718 yr Only slightly "OT" : http://www.coinfacts.com/nickels/buffalo_nickels/1936_buffalo_nickel.htm http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-1145.html
