What is that thing on my exhaust that look's like a CAT but it's not?

Featured Replies

Hey,

Can someone tell me what the name of that thing that's on the mid pipe after the Y-pipe, It look's like a Cat but it's after that! Because it's rattleing like a pig and i want to fix it! So anyone know?

Thank's tom.................

one of two things. some cars have two cats. or what your are thinking of would be the resenator. resenator looks like the exhaust pipe swollen up, and would be smooth on the outside. a second cat would have a heatsheild around it. they look totally different.

Hummm? Yeah it could be a second cat because it does have a heatsheild on it. See my first cat by the Y-pipe has no heatsheild on it. It must have fall'en of before i bought the car. Anyhoo can i fix the really anoying rattle? It sounds bad when i feed the gas and then it soulds like everyone else.

All SPFI cars have a second cat there. Yours is a second cat. Not a resonator.

Alright Mike, thanx!:) Do you know if i can stop the rattleing? It souls like it's inside that second cat. Because if i give it a light hit then it makes the noise. Plus when i rev it and take off from a stop:grin:

Do these subarus like to blow that cat out? As in hollow? I work at a junkyard and we're instructed to remove them at once due to thieves, but most are hollow and down the pipe is the real cat. Curious because all but one subaru was like this.

These subarus... if you mean 1980's it wouldnt surprise me, as they are old and tired by the time you get them.

The rattle, when the car is cold, hit the 2nd cat with your hand and see if it rattles. If it does the cat is shot.

A resonator is always after the muffler on a car. Most cars have done away with them.

Yeah it does not matter if the car is hot-cold it always makes noise and if i hit it with my hand it does it too! So that means it's crap! And if so then how do i replace it? Do i have to buy the mid pipe section?
