84 Hatch, Ignition, changing keys, ingnition and what mix's

Featured Replies

My new-2-me 84 Hatch has an issue with the Ignition/switch. The key is worn down but does work great in the doors but in the ignition it is very diffecult to get the key too sit just right for it too turn over and same trouble rolling back too shut down. Also, once started you can pull the key out of the ignition...which it shouldn't do that so I am thinking it is worn out and no good.

I called the Sub. dealer... $220 for new igniton/key...

I do have and 88' parts car.

Will the Ignition in that steering column work in my 84 Hatch?

Are key barrels/ignition tough to change out from the steering column once I find a good one with teeth still on the keys?

I talked to a lock smith and he said he can make a new key based on the passenger side door lock, take it out and take it too him.. but I am thinking there is a problem with the ignition barrel and a new key won't make a difference.

Have you asked about having a new key made off the vin number?

The door sylinder only uses part of the key, while the ignition poart uses the other part of the key.

The ignition switch uses break away bolts. You would need to drill the heads out and get new bolts.

Talk to the locksmith again about your options. Worse case scenario is that you have a an ignition key and a seperate door key.

Probably the first thing to try is a key cut to code. Many dealers put the key code in the owners manual, if that doesn't work you can get the code from your local Subaru dealer with your VIN, cutting a key from code usually costs $10-20.

No, not even close.

Not terribly hard - it's a lot of cursing. There's nuts or bolts (can't remember) that have to come out and you can only get at them with a needle nose pliers - use a pair of needle nose vice grips to break em loose, then a regular pair to unscrew them 1/16 of a turn at a time

I think you should at least give this a try - new leys can work wonders. He *should* be able to rebuild the lock cylinder if you take him the whole assembly as well. It's a standard nissan tumbler setup and you just drill out some pins and pop in a new one. Shouldn't give him much trouble.

Is the 88 parts car a hatch? If so the ignition will work, if not then no go.

I didn't run into any funny bolts on tearing apart my Hatch-

I have a known good cylinder/switch, new key, and a driver's side door cylinder that are up for the best offer-

Was it a DL? Those are different than GL's and a lot nicer to take apart (no tilt column).

Excellent info Subaru guy's and gal's... This info will get me going into the right direction.

I will try making a key first.....

No, the 88 is a wagon.. so no go on that.

Yes, the Hatch has tilt steering.

The Subaru dealer said he, "CAN NOT" use vin to cut new key... too old and no info available.

Will try key then look for replacement kind of thing...

May be very interested in your pieces parts.... I really think the cylinder switch is shot.... so..... we may need to talk about offer.

I have the switch and cyl with key from an 86 brat with tilt here on the wrong cost if nothing pans out local.
