EA81 Typical Oil Leaks

Featured Replies

Looking at resealing my EA81 in my Brat.....it's my first EA81 motor, so I was looking for a list of the typical leaks in a EA81

Info

1984 Brat

EA81 4-Speed D/R 99k on it.

Thanks in advance.

In order of most common to least common (in my experience)

valve cover gaskets

volve cover bolt rubber grommets

oil pan gasket

oil pump gasket

front crank seal

intake manifold gaskets (coolant)

rear main seal

I've had trannys that leaked at the case halves seam

Being a "non-timing belt" motor, the only places Ive ever seen an EA81 leak oil are from the valve cover gaskets, the oil pump, pressure sender, pan...and the mains.

EDIT : oops! McBrat beat me to it!

Thanks Guys,:headbang:

The valve covers are dry as a bone...but I have new ones, as I plan to adjust the valves too...

It looks to be leaking a little around the oil pump area...could be the oil pan too though....and maybe the front seal...

So I'll probably replace them all.

Can you do the oil pan with the motor in the car?

yes u can. Subaru drilled holes in the crossmember for "easy" oil pan removal. Its still a bitach to do that way though. If your going to reseal it i think it would be easier to just pull the engine.

Huck, good to see you on this side of the subaru world again. What fixed my dripping oil leak was a new OEM drain plug and crush ring.
