I just replaced the front pads and had the roters turned on my 99 Forester, now I have a slight vibration in the steering wheel. It feels like I have a tire out of balance. What would cause this?????

The tires being out of balance can cause it Also check the wheels nuts maybe they are not torqued evenly.

I'm interested in seeing how this turns out, because I am dealing with a similar shake that I can't seem to place (Alignment, balancing didn't fix). Now that you mention it, it started a while after turning the brake rotors.

i did the front and rear brakes on my legacy a while ago. the fronts turned out fine but the rears were turned to the absolute minimum and weeks later i had a bad vibration under braking. I bought new rotors and it works great. Im guessing the rotors could be truned wrong, you have to be absolutely sure the rotors are setup on the lathe just right. rust, dirt, grime can cause the rotor to be out of true when its put on the lathe.

Try moving the front tires to the rear and see if the steering wheel shimmy stops. If so check tires. If not continue to dig.

I'm thinking that if you just replaced the pads and rotors and then you got a shake, you probably ought to look at the things you just replaced: your pads and rotors.

 

It doesn't really make any sense that a tire just got out of balance. Like someone said above, maybe the rotors got turned incorrectly causing your shaking.

There are several possibilities. To help narrow them down:

1) Did the vibration start immediately after the brake work, or did it show up after some miles?

2) Does the vibration occur only when the brakes are applied, when not applied, or both? If both, does it change when applied versus not applied?

3) Does the vibration occur at all road speeds? Does it change with speed?

The vibration started immediately

 

Vibrates when brakes are not applied

 

vibration is only noticable at highway speed.

Step one, move the wheels (one at a time ) 90 degrees, This will rule out a driveline balance issue.

 

Step two, REPLACE the rotors. These rotors dont always like being cut.

 

I hate to state the obvious, but are the lug nuts tight?

 

Check to make sure the pads are seated, and that the sliders on the calipers are lubricated.

For what it is worth, I will never turn rotors again. It dont cost much more to replace them instead of turning them. I also have had many shake after having them turned.

Problem solved, it was the rotors. I put new rotors on, vibration is gone. This car must be balance sensitive. Who would have thought!!!!!
