Gas Leak ??

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 98 OB (auto) w/110k. When getting gas 3 tanks ago, the auto shut-off failed and I ended up with a ‘full to brim’ tank. No problems, no CEL but ever since after I shut the car off gas drips on the floor for 5 minutes or so. Appears to be in the area of the fill neck but due to much rain it has been hard to pinpoint. The next 2 tanks I only filled to ¾ full but the drips still occur. No prior history of this problem prior to the shut-off failure.

Any thoughts as to what may have happened?? :-\

Yes.

The filler neck was on the way out. When you filled it to the brim, that added weight opened up (what was going to happen sooner or later) the rusted out filler neck.

You need a new filler neck.

One possibility: the sudden pressure of the overfill punctured a soft rust spot on the fill pipe going to the tank. It's notorious to rust prematurely due to protective plastic shroud that collects wet dirt around the pipe.

You could check that by removing the right rear wheel.

You guys nailed it - rusted behind the shroud...good for another 110K:)

Thanks!

Glad it's fixed! Yes the filler pipe is rusty on all my soobs in this salt belt area.

You forgot to tell them about the "007 Trail o Fire" effect when combined with a spark.
