judging by other posts I've seen, this part is removed a lot???

I think one the Outbacks I have now has it. I'll check tomorrow.

Maybe just a Limited only thing? Its pretty cheesy. I might remember to take a picture of moms OB ltd one.

Nope. My 98 Limited doesn't have them . Would be nice if they came with it but oh well, I don't really carry passengers in the back anyways:-p .

I have only even found (new) the insert that someone linked above, never the entire part required to add the cupholder. Too lazy to source out a used on I guess, but I would imagine you can get one with a little motivation.

I don't know how much work it is worth, but it is the only cup holder i have ever seen that can expanded to hold a 4" cup.
