Car is cutting out and bogging

Featured Replies

I have a 87 gl turbo, When the car is idling and no power is on it idles fine but when i turn my lights on and heat at the same time the car bogs down when i am driving. The more stuff i turn on like wipers, rear defroster and cab lights it barely idles. . It has a brand new interstate battery in it. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks, JaSoN

May sound far fetched, but I'm thinking a grounding problem. Check your grounds, maybe add some more.

How's the alternator?

Not sure how good the alternator is, but i have checked my grounds. Im gonna go change my alternator out now and see what happens.

I put a new alternator in but it still cuts out on me

Is the motor bogging when you turn on all your accecories at idle? thats normal. you are putting a load on your alt.

new battery and alternator is minimal help if the wiring or connections are bad. how are the terminal connections, battery cable, alternator plug (many are brittle and in bad shape)...etc. bad charging or power issues usually show themselves but items on the dash board lighting up...all the red lights.

any check engine lights recently - when you get those you need to get the code and let us know what it is, that is usually a great starting point.

what is the status of tune up items - plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, etc?

first guess "if" it is sensor or electrical in nature is the coolant temperature sensor, and that's usually caused by and obvious by the amount of corrosion and poor condition of the wiring harness. you "should" get a check engine light if this is causing your problem though.

The wire plug in into my alternador has a really bad connection.

I suggest you try to fix that connection to the alternator as best you can. The real problem may be with the connections to the engine or the engine grounding, as was mentioned earlier.

There are a couple of main connectors near the battery that you might try seperating and then reconnecting to see if that will help fix this trouble. Another thing you can try is running a temporary ground jumper between the engine and negative side of the battery to see if that improves things.

Check the fusible links also to make sure they are making good connection. They are inside the small box mounted on the coolant reservoir.
