I have an 86 brat and it does not have the steps in front of the rear wheels that I have seen on other brats and some hatches. was this an option that came with the jump seats or is it for roof rack / topper access?

The steps came standard with jumpseats.

86 and 87 were imported as trucks and as such did not have jump seats (there was no point). Consequently there was no side steP. 85 and older have a single step on the sidewalk side (passenger side) of the vehicle. For cosmetic reasons a blank was added to the other side to make them not look lopsided. But only one of them is a true step.

 

Hatch's do not have them - don't know where you got that notion.

Yes, Jerry knows what he is doin I have seen his collection and his work is pretty impressive, he's a very innovative guy and he knows a lot.

You are talking about one of his two, "Hatchbrats" .... (he is one with the Subee's) he mix's, matches, makes, twists and add's things :-p so yea, he probably just added those for looks as the top is a Brat and lower part Hatch... I finaly drove over too have a look... :cool:
