somewhat concerned

Recommended Posts

Just replaced the head gaskets on an ea82. Did all the other seals, orings, new timing belts. timing is @ 18 degrees.

Started it today for the 1st time and started up right away & oil pres. went up right away. Thanks to all the help here it made the job allot easier and way more understandable then the Hynes book:P

My only concern is its ticking super loud, way louder then I thought it would. I know the lifters have to pump up. Just ticking louder then you would normally hear an ea82 tick.

I made extra sure the oil pump seals were all installed correctly and didnt get messed up on the way in. I did replace all three seals in the pump (mickey mouse, the round o-ring and the shaft seal).

I didnt take it for a drive yet and most people say it just needs to drivin to get the lifters to pump up. So if someone could chim and let me know if the engine ticked louder then normal after replacing all the gasket such as I did, that would be great.

Thanks

They tick - it's typical of HG replacement. It's avoidable if you take a few precautions:

1. Use only OEM seals for the oil pump and the cam towers (metal reinforced).

2. Replace the lifters into the EXACT same locations where they came from. If they ticked before, have them rebuilt.

3. Crank the engine with all the plugs removed till the oil pressure guage registers. It can take several minutes.

4. Wait for any RTV to fully cure before starting the engine to avoid sucking any uncured RTV into the oiling system.

It's just a matter of being very careful, and very precise with your work. Label everything you aren't sure of, and take pictures as you go. I have done multiple EA82 head gaskets on engines that never ticked before or after. Most recently I had an 86 with 240k on it - never a tick before or after HG replacement.

It ticked very little before. Its pretty bad now. I used all oem gaskets and felpro pt head gaskets & let all rtv dry (for days).

Some of the lifters came out but there where replaced back to there org locations (assuming rotation doesnt matter). I did notice on some you could push them in an 1/8 inch till there was resistance. Other had no give at all.

Will the ticking go away after driving it some?

usually. it's typically very loud on start up. much louder than a normal ticking HLA. for now we can only assume it hasn't run long enough. it's got oil right?

i've seen frozen HLA's - the only way to fix that is to replace the bad HLA. and when i say frozen - i mean they don't give under vice pressure, heated in an over, soaking for days with all sorts of detergents...etc. if they're that bad they have to be replaced.

Yup has oil, pressure is well over 45lbs on the stock gauge.

some of the lifters wouldnt slide out of the head not sure if that a bad thing. It only tick a little on start up before doing the HGs.

Ill let it warm up tomorrow and see what happens after reving it some.

Thanks

that doesn't matter, there's always a few that don't. they can be a real PITA to get out of the bores. i don't even bother since I always take them to a machine shop they take them out. you'll be pleasantly surprised tomorrow, nothing sounds out of the ordinary at all.

Let it warm up and revved it up some drove it around and revved it some more and its nice and smooth.

I do hear some ticking but I think its the pcv valve (def. not the lifters). Pretty loud, didnt think it would tick loud enought ot hear it when the hood is shut. Have to look into to that this weekend.

Thanks For the help.
