One step forward in the subaru world

Recommended Posts

This is my first post in the "newer Gen's" of this subaru Forum. I have had over 35 Subaru's but I seemed to have stepped out side of my box on my last Subaru buy. I have had Brat's, Gen 1 and 2, Wagons, 77-89, and hatchbacks, But yesterday I was on craigslist and I saw a 91 Legacy for 200 bucks, So I called the person up and they said that it had broken a timing belt back in 05, They took it to a shop and had it replaced but they said they could never get it running again after that. I pulled it home and put it on the charger, and about midnight last night turned it over. Someone has taken the mass air flow sen. but it was able to make a little bit of a running sound, or at least enough to let you know that it had fuel and spark and a little bit of firing over left in it. The real bad part of this is I don't know much at all about these kind of cars. All the old school ones are pretty easy to work on but this one kinda scares me a little.

I just want everone to know that I might be asking some very stupid question's but That's the only way to learn.

So here goes my first stupid one.

Are wheels and bolt pattern on the legacy's are 5 on 100 I did a seach but there are a crap load of things to go through in a search with "bolt pattern"

Anyways once I dive into this thing a little more I'll have a ton of Q's.

Here is what it looks like nothing to great but it should be fun.

The timing belt may not be properly installed. Lots of them initially get put on wrong because the incorrect marks are used (don't use the arrows). Following are some links to info that should help to verify things.

EndWrench articles:

Motor Magazine series; starts with 2.2, then moves on to 2.5:

Right on that'll help a lot. I have about 6 or 7 subaru books but none of them went into good detail like this. And there was alot, lot of reading involved, without pics. I wish Subaru manuels came in pop up book verison:rolleyes: then that would be right up my alley.

the links that I quoted did not work but the Endwrench ones did.

Thank you

Jeff

You're welcome, Jeff. Sorry about the Motor Magazine links -- they apparently recently changed the Website a bit.

The following should work:

welcome to the New Gen! went thru the "new" car jitters myself just last year - not as bad as I thought it would be.

The single timing belt can be a bit of a bear to get in (not as easy as the EA82's, but not too hard either), if you take your time, read everything thoroughly before you start and a couple of times during to verify, you will be fine.

decent looking little sedan you got there - a little clean up and she wont look too bad.

Good luck with the new toy!

Nice Sedan

dont be intimadated by the legacys the ej22 is great i will never go back to the ea style more room and everything. And i have noticed something about the legs how often(i know you havent noticed this yet) do you see a legacy with the inside little things like windows and options that dont work? I am a Huge fan of the ej cars now. This is all coming from a guy that swore by the ea81s for years and said id never own a legacy, now i have 2 legacys and an ea82 sedan powered by an ej. Ask any questions you want anytime and we will all try to help thats what we all are here for! Just my 2cents

Thanks for the warm welcome. It's good to know that there are few guys out there Like me. The very first subaru I had was an 80 hatch 2wd with an EA71, then I got a 79 brat. From there on out I ended up with 2 lifted EA81's and Just latly I had gotten into the EA82's. Once I saw this car I figured it's real close to my house, Cheap, and if I screw up real bad on it I won't be out much. So I was one of those guys who was always going to be the die hard EA series guy for ever and here I am, Putting Timing belts on an EJ22.

Welcome to New Gen, Jeff. Nice looking car, great price. You're gonna' love it.

There's no such thing as a dumb question so ask away.

(I especially like the straw in the driver's seat--nice earthy touch!)

Aloha.

Walker Valley here we come,

I don't know if it'll go up to walker. I think this one will be more for the road, and I'll keep the Brat for Walker and the mud. I would like to get a Legacy Wagon and lift it like that one on the AA lifts website.

This is it

I think this thing look really cool.
