March 20, 200818 yr My wife has been driving my subaru 4 speed and got used to the hill holder and says she loves it. she just got a new explorer with a 5 speed but no hill holder. Is there a way to some how hook a hill holder up to the explorer?
March 20, 200818 yr Probably not.... the ABS systems and the hydraulic clutch on an explorer wouldn't be compatible with the way the HH works. The HH's are cable actuated on the older Subaru's.... I have no idea how they work on the newer stuff by I suspect it's electronic using the ABS/traction control nanny.... GD
March 20, 200818 yr It can be done as the HH is just a mechanical valve, and has no affect on the abs. http://www.mypersonaldrive.com/Spr03_HillHolder.htm Subaru has bought back the hill holder on its cars. I dont know what year, but one can always try to find one and pup the hood and check for cables, there shouldnt be any. There is no differnce between the hill holder holding the car, and your foot on the brake pedal when the car is stopped. The only critical thing really is to make sure that the hill holder is mounted at the same leve as it is in a subaru, which i do beleive is parallel to the ground. nipper
March 20, 200818 yr Kind of interesting that they mention it CANNOT be retrofitted to older models. Kinda sucks cause I would love to have a hill holder on my 98 Outback, but being hydrolic next to impossible .

Ford hydro clutches are inside the bell-housing if I'm not mistaken.... where would you attach the cable? I suppose something could be made to work on the pedal end, but that's a lot of work - just buy her a newer Subaru that has it. GD
March 20, 200818 yr They are cable actuated off the clurch fork. If i had a stick on Blu I would put one on him. nipper

All that is accesible from the outside of the transmission is a hydraulic line. It would difficult to say the least. GD
