April 22, 200817 yr Get a yakima gutter mount system. I had one on my GL until I sold the car. It was very strong and I could put lots of gear up in the basket I made. The towers are called the 1A towers and then you need some load bars 48" I have a set of bars if you need those. April 28, 200817 yr I had my set on an 84 Tercel wagon with gutters and it held lots of weight! I would like to mount the set again, but I also need different towers, as my 88 does not have gutters. I like the idea of a gear basket on the cheap. Take some pics and specs as you go!

I have hauled at various times, not all together: 4 pcs 4x12 sheetrock. 3 boxes vinyl siding. 4x8 plywood. 6-8 pcs 4x8 sheeetrock. 24 pcs 4x8 foam insulation board - sandwiched with 1/2ply so it doesn't crush. various 2x framing wood, up to 20' long. 21' lengths of pipe. 12' long extension ladder. all of the 5'x9' rebar mesh in for the floor of my basement & garage. Huge Christmas trees. 8' lengths of HVAC ductwork. My 4' square flatbed trailer - when one wheel bearing seized up while deadheading it back home. Yes, it makes some odd wind noise on the highway. Low piched intermittant growly sort of sound. Not really loud though. For the original version I modified a spare hood stay to hold the hood open under the overhanging part. That was very annoying, and eventually I made the front part removeable. It installs & removes with 6 pins, so I only put it on when I need to haul long stuff. The hitch test picture shows the version with the removable front part removed. The other smaller pics are of the original fixed version. From 30' away you couldn't tell the difference when the overhood piece is on. For anything long with mass to it, I put an X of straps from the tow hooks to the top of the front vertical supports to stiffen the whole thing up. You can grab the rack anywhere and shake the whole car.

May 7, 200817 yr you are hysterical. I have had a ton of stuff on the top of my car when it had this system on it. Unfortunately I sold the car. I m now driving an outback and I love the feel.
May 7, 200817 yr send me a picture of the car. If you have the black trim that runs along the roof line the gutters are behind that trim. Do you have a factory rack? May 8, 200817 yr Yep. Gutters are behind the trim. On mine, the Yakimas fit almost PERFECTLY behind/over the trim. The only bummer is/was that I occasionally catch the trim on stuff I'm trying to lift over them on their way up to the racks ... I've had to re-set them from time to time. I can grab the racks and shake the car with them - they've done expressway speeds with desks, etc on them. As long as the gutters don't rust out...

May 8, 200817 yr I see them now. My old Toyota had glaringly obvious gutters to mount the Yak to. I put my Yak on this evening and like it. I had to flex it a bit to get it to fit, though...:-\

May 10, 200817 yr Author who would have thought?.... Decided to go with proline towers and bars and am welding up a basket from 1/2" EMT electrical conduit highly reccomend using a resperator tried it without and just using the lincoln vacuum hoods at work and i got real sick. pics when done.
