i have a 91 legacy turbo, when ever i turn on the A/C there is a loud squeeling sound coming from the compresser im pretty sure, then at times it starts sending smoke through the vents, a friend said it sounds like it could be the bearing, anyone know what could be wrong??

I think it is the bearings for the a/c clutch. You will probly be best off finding another compressor at the yards.

THe squeeling could be a loose or worn belt too. Turn the a/c on with the car parked, and spray some water on the belts, if the squeeling changes, replace the belt.

 

The smoke coming out the vents is usually water vapor. If you switch the A/C controlls to Recirc, it should go away. Check that the drain hose out of the evaporator box is clear, it's a rubber hose that comes out of the bottom passenger side of the firewall, visible if you slide under the car It should have water dripping out of it with the a/c on.

i dont know if you have the means but you could try and recover the existing refrigerant pull a vaccum and recharge....it could just be low on oil......i still have the original A/C compressor in my 96 legacy and it gives off a little screech every now and than but is still works great!...

You have a siezed AC compressor. The fan belt is burning up and causing smoke. The smoke is pulled in to the car by the HVAC fan from the vents under the hood.

 

Soon enough the problem will fix itself when the belt breaks.

Nipper......I agree with you, it sound like a siezed up A/C compressor. The clue, is writer says the squeal and smoke only occur when A/C system is turned on. R & R the compressor should fix the problem.

Just in case the compressor/clutch/belt aren't the source of noise and smoke (it shouldn't be difficult to determine that), perhaps the blower is. You could run the heater a bit, and try the blower at several speeds -- if it's bad, it should be possible to detect without A/C.
