Question?

Featured Replies

Having just found a completely torn outer boot on the driverside cv axle I pose a question:

Do I pull the axle and replacing the inner and outer boot, but no other components, except for grease?

OR

Do I pull the axle and replace with a remanufactured axle?

I am kind of strapped for cash.

The car is 95 legacy wagon w/ 139k.

If your strapped for cash and doing it yourself, replace the boot. Take the cv joint apart, clean it, and use a sooby boot (they are thicker then aftermarket).

If you can afford it, get an MWE axle.

The first option is only going to cost you time and the boot. The true factor is how long do you think the boot was like that?

I think the raman axle is only $60 at AutoZone. Comes pre-greased and ready to go in. I would go that route. Do a search on this site for good RnR posts.

I wouldnt. Too many incidents of drive line vibration from cheap drive axles.

+1

My autozone axle lasted 3 months...and vibrated the whole time above 50mph.

I installed a used Subie axle for $40 and have had no issues since.

P.S. If you do go used, I believe multiple years and generations interchange on the AWD axles....Subies are great for that!

Oh yeah, I had a after market DS in the wifes imp that made noise like a bag of ball bearings where tied to the underside of the car. Did it for 3 years. A few weeks ago I put a used soob axle from a legecy in it, not a sound now.
