November 13, 200817 yr Hi, always ran great. Lately it runs like crap. No power, sounds like it is missing. Then will go back to running great. I checked the choke, opening just fine. Replaced wires, plugs, rotor, cap. Sometimes I smell raw gas. Oxygen sensor, clogged cat, coil going bad... ? I know, grasping at straws. '87 ea-81 four speed. Thanks, Dave in Prescott, Az.
November 14, 200817 yr Change the fuel filters. Should be 2 of them. One under the hood and one near the fuel pump under the back of the truck.
November 14, 200817 yr Remove the cat, sea foam the engine and change the fuel filters. My gl had that same issue.
November 14, 200817 yr wire the choke open and try running it like that... Mine looked to be opening OK but turned out it actually wasnt...
November 14, 200817 yr My 85 did that when I got it. Run fine, then start dying out loose all power, then go back normal again. People thought I was breaking down if someone was riding with me. In my case it was the mechanical mixture control, all the vacuum lines, valves and thermoswitches. Some of them had went bad it can be hard to test each part by its self. Take the 2 larger hoses off the top of the carb(not the fuel) , put a cap of some kind on the fittings on the carb and see is it runs better. If you leave it like it will be running to rich though and your gas mileage will go way down. I put in smaller jets from a damaged older carb back in mine to fix that problem.
November 16, 200817 yr things to check for that might cause "spoadic" condition 1: carb to make sure the secondary is closing as it should. 2: thermo vacuume switches (or the vaccume lines to them and connections) 3: distributor, all wires, and connections 4: vacuume advance on distributor
November 20, 200817 yr Author thanks for the replys, these are a *************** to figure out. especially now that it is running right. dp
