96 OBW needs 5 speed whats the ratio ?

Featured Replies

looking at a 96 legacy outback wagon its a 5 speed and the 4th gear isnt there , I may get the car, my ? is whats the diff is it a 3.9, 4.11 or a 4.44 ?? I have a 91 gen 1 tranny wondering if it would work in there

96 outback 5 speed is a 4.11
That's probably correct for a Legacy Outback wagon since that's what the tranny chart shows. However, Fuji was notorious for installing whatever transmission was available at the time. Only way to tell is to check the TY number on the bell housing or engine compartment VIN plate.

From the USRM:

Too bad I couldn't print out the form for convenience.

To identify your transmission look for a label on the bell housing near the starter motor. My '97 Impreza has one reading 6Y-TY752VA5AA. I don't know what the 6Y means, but the TY etc. is what's important to identify your gearbox.

good points - it almost has to be a 4.11, but Subaru was awkward with EJ transmissions over the years.

the 96 legacy's i've gotten had hydraulic clutches, but they were GT's, not OBW's, so maybe the OBW's only have the cable style clutch? if it has the same hydraulic clutches of the GT's then that will require some custom fitting of your first generation trans.

not so sure on the 91 trans, but you should be able to check easily enough if you have it already. i'd think that could go 3.9 or 4.11?

For what it's worth, my '96 OBW has a cable clutch. I'll check the tranny code tomorrow and report back if you like

You will like the car, I just got one and it is a nice ride. BTW mine is a cable clutch. Last year for the hill holder, I think...

Do you by any chance to check to # of the 96 OBW 5 speed trany? I am looking at one with bad trany.

BTW, I have seen a lot of 5 speed trany with 4th gear going out, are they reliable since they are cable activated and need adjustment???

Thanks

Appreciated!

got the car will check all the numbs thanks guys
