December 25, 200817 yr my wife just got home after a trip to the store and she says the whole car is shaking and it wont shift. i look under the car and where the 2 front lift blocks are attached to some plate broke off on both sides ! the tranny in at a angle now and a large piece of metal is hanging down on both side's where the mounts used to hold it up. its 17 and snowing out and dark so i cant get a real good look at it, what t do you thin k it could be ?
December 25, 200817 yr sounds like she caught traction while spinning the tires and ripped the subframe apart....

Sounds like the front lift blocks that lift the plates for the strut rods has ripped out of the body. Its a pretty common problem from what I hear with lifted Subarus. Thats gonna be my guess since you also mentioned the tranny is hanging which is where the tranny crossmember bolts to IIRC.
December 25, 200817 yr Author Sounds like the front lift blocks that lift the plates for the strut rods has ripped out of the body. Its a pretty common problem from what I hear with lifted Subarus. Thats gonna be my guess since you also mentioned the tranny is hanging which is where the tranny crossmember bolts to IIRC. that's it ! how do i fix it ? what parts do i need to get from the junk yard. and how can i upgrade so it wont happen anymore. thanks for all the help.
December 25, 200817 yr well...... if it has truely ripped out of the body, you're kind of in a bad spot since the subframe where you're talking about bolts INTO the body. It rips the welded captive nut through the sheetmetal of the body and leaves a torn hole from where it used to be. It'll be trying to mend what ripped instead of replacing it. You can also try making it stronger when you repair it though.
December 25, 200817 yr Author i had a chance to look at it a little better, it looks like the blocks are still on the frame but the part that bolts to the other side of the blocks tore out. sorry i am new :confused:but learning every day.... what part do you think it is ?
December 25, 200817 yr See my above post. If the blocks are still attached to the subframe then they have indeed ripped from the body.
December 25, 200817 yr there is NO FRAME, just BODY, unless you add subframe have a good look later when it's warmer and brighter, and take pictures
December 25, 200817 yr the radius rod mounting plates ripped.you will need the entire subassembly that is your radius rods, plate(attachment to the body,or in your case lift)and tranny crossmember.maybe tranny mounts too...pics help alot.cheers, brian
December 25, 200817 yr Author had a chance to look at i t................... it is bad real real bad. i need a new car . anyone selling a 1983 wagon
December 25, 200817 yr Craigslist is your friend. There's a fair amount of EA81s that I see for real cheap with blown headgaskets or ones with the need of rebuilt carbs. Your lift will fit under any EA81 4wd car be it a hatch/Brat/wagon/coupe/sedan
December 25, 200817 yr Yes get some pics I bet it can be fixed! Ditto, let us see pics. Where do you live?
December 25, 200817 yr Author I live in Portland Oregon. i think i can weld new plates where it pulled out of the body, i will try to get some pictures up. all 4 lift blocks pulled loose, 3 pulled out of the body and 1 is still on the cross member ! merry Christmas ?? welll i did get a awesome tool set of tools for a gift so i can work on it now. i just took out the engine and trans today ! now i can really see whats going on.
December 25, 200817 yr ...i just took out the engine and trans today ! now i can really see whats going on. :eek:Why? I hope it wasn't just to fix the body. Because it should be easy to do with everything in, only a few pieces removed. Good luck though, do you have a welder?
December 26, 200817 yr Author i removed the engine because i plan on installing new heads anyway. its all good ! ya i have a welder but have no idea how to use it ! thanks for all the help everyone
December 26, 200817 yr Well, too bad I live in Eugene. Take some pics and we can asses the material needed. I kinda feel like a road trip. I know how to weld, I used to get paid to do it at an iron shop... I may be willing to help out.
December 26, 200817 yr You might as well reinforce the whole thing while your under there. See McBrats off road project in the off road section.
January 31, 200917 yr Author i fixed it . welded all the lift blocks on the tops only, installed steel plated all around the blocks, welded the tops. thanks for all the help
