Long travel rear coil overs-possibly-have questions

Featured Replies

Im starting with a video and a few questions.

If for some reason you cant watch the video let me know and ill type it out and upload some pics.

Thanks for the help. This might turn out easier than i originally thoughts.

If this work im pretty sure i know how im going to build new long travel front struts.

at least people are building stuff.

i do not see alot of gained travel.

maybe a couple of inches.kinda like the front strut i built.

i do see a shock extension going away, but only a little bit of travel.......

i have been pondering this for quite some time ,and i just see a shock spring combo for us working for the front anyway.........

then all we need to worry about is axle extension basically.......

curious to see how they fit...what the rest measurement is.

be sure to take the pre installation measurements too.....compressed, extended, and at ride height.cheers, brian

you might look up the accord spring mod too ;)

that would defeat the purpose as the accord springs are quite a bit stiffer than a subaru wagon one (which is already almost 200 lb/in ).

what you want, for a long travel setup, is a softer spring. I think something in the 170 lb/in range would work very well on a wagon (more like 140 or so on a sedan). the subaru springs are exactly 2.5" ID, which makes aftermarket springs very easy to come by.

Is there any visiable difference between looks of the sedan and wagon spring? The spring that is currently on the sedan has no problem being fully compressed. What this coil over is built from is what i thought 2 rear wagon springs. But one is significantly lighter. I might have to change the heavier one out with the stock sedan spring. The down and up travel i bet will increase 4" at least with this new coil setup. I guess we will have to see.

I've never had anything other than wagons (well...and my XT6, but that had air stuff). so I'm really not sure what a stock one looks like.

I do know that the shock and upper perch are the same. so they're the same diameter, and about the same length when in use. I would suspect, though, that the sedans ones are a touch longer when free. one of each might be a good setup, effectively giving it a progressive rate....

Looks the goods.

How much longer are the shock bodies over standard? Like bottom pin the top of the body?

I like my 83... Torsion bar and all.. Makes life so much easier. But you work with what you got I guess.

Ill get some pics up soon. But to sum it up i gained 5.5" of travel. It helped out a lot.

I gained 5.5 inches of travel to what i already had. It could be 6.5 gained but i need to do a little cutting.

That's pretty good. What did it start with? I'm used to torsion bar rear end where you just need to bolt a long shocker in and you get long travel.
