February 18, 200917 yr My heat shield are driving me nuts. I don't have a welder but I do have a saws-all and a grinder. Pro's and cons?
February 18, 200917 yr How bad is it and what is left? I used to tear the old ones off my rusty soob. However, on my dad's there was a fair bit left. Can you drive a sheetmetal screw somewhere or wrap a hose clamp around it to stop the noise?
February 18, 200917 yr I theory you could park on grass or leaves and start a fire. In reality, I just tear them off and never think twice about it.
February 18, 200917 yr if it looks easy, repair it with screws, bolts, a tack weld - but it's aluminum. if they're bad, which they usually are, rip them off. i always do. i drive off road, through fields, tall grass....etc, and aint started any fires yet. but of course if you start one, that's your decisions (disclaimer, thank you!)
February 18, 200917 yr I drove my car up on small ramps, left it run at idle, crawled under the car, and with a hammer pounded in (wedged) good size bolts where I could detect shroud vibration. Worked like a charm.

No, those sheilds are steel, I've welded them many times. And I am convinced they are Armor more than heat sheilds. If you look at them, the lower portion(underneath) is pretty heavy duty steel for a heat shield.
February 18, 200917 yr Author Ok so two bolts one hose clamp and two less heat shields "armor" and my headaches are gone for now. I do have to say the bracket between the two cats was the problem and a piss poor design.
February 18, 200917 yr just tear them off, it's the best way to never have to deal with them again! And unless you park in tall grass after the motor has been running a while than you'll never have to worry about a fire
