Okay well i would like some input from ya'll. I am going into the army for Automotive so i will have access to alot of cool sh*t. So i wrote down a brain storm of what i want to do to a subie. I might be doing this to an 83 GL wagon.

4" lift

29x9x15 tsl

custom bumpers front and back, and rocker panals

Skid plates for the front and rear diff and gas tank (i have already dented a fuel cell mobbing around my friends property)

EJ22 swap

Whatever i can put in the engine for a higher rev. limit and stuff.

5 spd D/R swap

Welded rear diff.

Custom roof rack, and storage holder in back.

CB radio

Custom sound system (gotta have my tunes man)

Better ignition system ( no cool really what would work good open for ideas)

bucket racing seats in front possible in the back also for my sons.

Roll bar?? or cage haven't decided yet

Lots of offroad lights lol...

All black paint job

Yellow top battery

fender trimming

New gauges on a cluster

lots of toggle switchs

Custom 2.5" exhaust with x pipe and dual cherry bombs

2 8" or 10" inch pusher fans

luved hood

5 lugs conversion

so yeah open for suggestions or ideas on what i can improve on it. it would really help me. i want to stick with ifs and irs. and i would like to keep this as my daily driver and such.:confused:

this is the best picture i have of the subie.

Well looks good!! No need for higher rev limit for motor, it has no power beyond 6000 rpm's anyway. And as for the 5 lug swap, you'll need XT^ parts which are getting hard to find. Good luck! Sounds like a sweet rig

I dont want to sound like a "wongleflute", yes I do. I dont know what you having access to cool sh*t meens.

You will not be allowed to work on your car in the Army Motor Pool, something your recruiter told you?

Also it would be theft ifany of the Army's/ Taxpayers what you call sh*t was to show up on your car, or tools were taken to work on your car.

This would be a way to END your Army stay before you begin.

The Army/ Military does have Auto Hobby Shops that you rent stalls/ lifts, tools ect. Hopefully thats what you are talking about.

the stalls are what i was talking about, and also some of the machining stuff if i can get premision to use it. I will be buying all the materials that i would need to fab up stuff like the rocker panals and bumpers and whatever else i need to fab up.

any ideas about anything i can do for extra horsepower and torque to an ej22???

any ideas about anything i can do for extra horsepower and torque to an ej22???

You don't need any extra power out of an EJ22 when it's in an old GL wagon!! It will have plenty of power. You can always do exhaust and intake, those are easy. But the only real power gains would come from a turbo motor which really isn't practical with an off road car of any kind

its not about power, its about gearing.

i have a EJ22 swapped into my lifted 86 wagon and it will BARK 3rd gear, not chirp but Bark. with a EJ22, 5sp D/R, and a rear LSD you will be fine.

im running a 2inch lift, TSL SSR's, 3.90 rear LSD, and the EJ22 and i have yet to find a place i can't get through because of lack of power. i still get 25MPG on the highway and thats with my roof rack and the SSR's, city i get about 20mpg.

sweet sweet okay makes sense, my buddy who knows this kinda of stuff is too busy to talk to me, but yeah that makes sense of why alot of guys do that swap. which one is better for the ej swap carb or fuel injection???

29x9x15 tsl

Personally I would stick with the 27's or 28's.. Gearing is everything

Skid plates for the front and rear diff and gas tank (i have already dented a fuel cell mobbing around my friends property)

The gearbox is well protected, no need for bash plate unless you have an auto. The engine sump needs a bash plate, I've found stock is not good enough as it bends easy and ends up bending your sump while its there. But most importantly you want to protect those exhaust pipes, they are th lowest point and are prone to getting screwed over by rocks (I just had this happen AGAIN).

Whatever i can put in the engine for a higher rev. limit and stuff.

EJ22 limits at something like 6500rpm, nothing wrong with this. You really should shift at around 5500 to 6000 anyhow otherwise the power drops off and you loose.

Custom sound system (gotta have my tunes man)

Think about water when you put the speakers and amp in..

Better ignition system ( no cool really what would work good open for ideas)

EJ22's in older bodies are pretty powerful and they come with a pretty nice ignition setup already.

Lots of offroad lights lol...

Don't forget to do the relay mod to your headlights before adding more lightage, this really helps with lighting and you may end up saving $$$ on lots of lights. Sure having 4 or so extra spotties is great but headlights need to be good no matter what and its so easy.

Custom 2.5" exhaust with x pipe and dual cherry bombs

Don't go 2.5, its a waste of ground clearance. Go 2", its PLENTY of flow and sounds great. Oh, and if your running an x pipe you probably don't even need 2" as two 1.75" pipes has plenty of flow too.

Sounds like fun mate, enjoy building it!

as mentioned....no need for higher revs and different ignition system with an EJ22 (both would require a stand-alone ECU, which is a huge can of worms as far as cost and effort is concerned). some Phenolic intake mani spacers (Grimmspeed.com please tell them Chux sent you if you can.....having some problems with Mr Grimm and any referrals would be helpful. Great products though!), throttle body spacer (I nabbed a Group A one on ebay for fairly cheap), and some Delta cams will give it lots of low end torque, which is crucial for wheeling a subaru, since the gearing sux.....

Although you could throw a Diamond (stock on 5MT legacies, IIRC) coil pack and some Magnecor 8mm plug wires on there...that'd make sure those properly-gapped NGK plugs (right?) fire as hot as possible.

power-wise, that's pretty much exactly the setup that I'll be running in my wagon this summer (well.....with Delta ported heads, a Link standalone ECU and a supercharger too.....).

5-lug is another giant can of worms that is entirely un-necessary for a wheeler. The parts are rare and expensive, and only offer big brakes and stiffer suspension, and the stuff already available for 4-lug is plenty. Grab a rear disc swap, and redrill the hubs to 6-lug, bolt some Toyota 15s (or similar...) on there, and call it a day.

i got a mercedes 60000 volt coil with ngk plugs and the thick insulation wires from ngk on it with a weber 32/36 on it right now i bought it from one of my buddies and put a 3 inch exhaust on it, what the difference between running a weber on a ej22 vs the FI??

unless you are into tuning your car,and are ABLE to tune your car i would stick with fuel injection.it is just easier to deal with for most people.cheers, brian

agreed. a carbed EJ22 has some decent potential. but the factory ECU is pretty smart. able to keep AFRs in the best range throughout the revs, and the ignition allows a lot more advance than a disty would ever allow. I highly doubt anyone could get more power out of a carb than the FI.

also 3inch is WAY too big for any N/A engine, you want to run 2.5inch at the most. most cars make more power with 2.25inch.

so in other words i should run a 2 inch lift with 28 inch tires:banana:

4" will make fitting the tyres much easier.. And it archives a certain look of a 4WD.

I've found wide tires are good for Subaru's as well, skinny have advantages but wide tyres out weigh them.

so in other words i should run a 2 inch lift with 28 inch tires:banana:

4 inch lift. 2 inch exhaust :)

  • Author

opps my bad i read something wrong and thought we were talking about a lift, i am gonna stick with the 4 inch and 1.75 xpipe dual exhaust (cherry bomb)

:burnout::burnout::burnout::burnout::burnout:

Sounds awesome, post up pictures when the work commences please :)

  • Author

i will diffently be posting pics of it, i drew up a picture of what it should be close to looking like without the tires.
