December 12, 201015 yr This looks to be the best way around the crappy stock alt. Thanks for the info! My '84 GL will be getting this setup. Question though, did I read correct that the factory (ea81) harness can be modified to plug into this Maxima alt, or do you need a bit of harness from a junkyard Maxima? Thanks!
December 13, 201015 yr Author Yes - if you pull the spade connectors out of the plastic connector on the EA81 harness they can just be slipped onto the Maxima alt male spade's. GD
December 23, 201015 yr so i did this over the weekend, works fine but for some reason i cant get the pulleys to line up right even after grinding the spacer i cant really figure it out is there something im missing?
December 23, 201015 yr Do you mean it wobbles or do you mean the position of the pulley compared to where it needs to be in line with the belt is off?? Got a pic? Mine was basically straight swap but it still wobbles a tad because we couldnt get the spacer perfect.
December 23, 201015 yr its still sticks a taad to far out in relation to where it needs to be idk why but its starting to get annoying:mad:
December 23, 201015 yr Author Pics would help. A slight missalignent with v belts is not a big deal. They will handle quite a bit. That said - I would need pics of your setup to further advise. GD
January 17, 201115 yr GD, or anyone else that might know... Ive got a reman 90A Maxima alt in the mail to do this swap, but Im unsure of what pulley I need. Im concerned about the double pulley rubbing the AC belt. What pulley would work? Thanks for any help:)
January 17, 201115 yr To repeat what GD said, "You can use either pulley, you just have to grind the spacer until the belt is properly aligned." It may not be exact, but it's easier than hunting it down and quoting it. Twitch
January 17, 201115 yr Author Yep - you can use that EA81 pulley. That will look great in there! What a nice engine bay! Please post a pic when you get it installed.... GD
January 17, 201115 yr Author Sure - zip it off there and make your spacer to fit that pulley. The spacer will be a little shorter than in my pics. GD
January 17, 201115 yr Sweet! Thanks dude. Ill post a pic when its in. It should be here this week. I look forward to swapping out the POS stock unit. It cannot even handle the heater fan on high and the high beams, at idle.
January 19, 201115 yr Success! Nabbed a reman alt off of ebay for $70 shipped to my door. Works great! Idle with no load, 14.38V With high beams, fog lamps, heater fan on full blast, at idle Im seeing 12.8V Lights BARELY dim when the revs come to idle. A few tips... * I found the optimum spacer thickness to be 11mm. I used an end wrench to keep the thickness true as I was grinding the factory spacer down. To do the grinding I put the spacer in a vice, and used an angle grinder. I finished with a bench mounted belt sander. * The round battery lead connector had to be opened up to fit over the stud on the alt. * I didnt like how the spade connectors connected to the alternator on the top. Moisture collection was my concern. I made a foam rubber cover to fix the problem. Just a small rectangular bit, with a cut in the middle to allow the wires to pass through. Rock on! October 17, 201114 yr reviving this important thread. bummed that the pics from GD's original post are gone. IIRC, they were useful and relevant.
October 17, 201114 yr also, i'm preparing to do this swap for my 88 GL with power steering/no AC GD - are you still supplying these units?
October 17, 201114 yr Author Yeah - I can supply you with one. Just PM me the details. Pics were hosted on my old internet provider's native hosting - they sucked and I switched to fiber so those addresses are gone - sadly I cannot update the posts in this thread to rehost he pictures with Picasa because the post is too old and won't allow me the edit option. Perhaps a mod can do something about that..... GD

November 30, 201114 yr OLD THREAD QUESTION. is the body the same size on these things? tried to drop one in my XT and the body was HUGE. didn't fit at all. picked up a reman 87 nissan maxima 3.0 SOHC alt. did i screw up?
November 30, 201114 yr Same size as the OE alt on my '84 GL Only difference as far as the case goes is the harness connection location.
December 19, 201114 yr I see thay generaldisorder said that the nissan alt would work from an 87 to 94 maxima. My question is, is the alternator the same from a 96 maxima. I looked at oreilly's autoparts website and the looked the same. I was just looking for conformation on this. thanks for the input ahead of time.
December 19, 201114 yr Author It's not the same in the '95+ Maxima - the dimensions are slightly different and it's a 95 Amp instead of the 90 of the older Maxima's. You can (I have) make them fit with some modifications to the brackets and the pulley swap I do still works on them. Not worth it for the extra 5A IMO. GD
