Noob with a general question- what engine do I have??

This may sound stupid, but I just was given a 1990 Legacy with a 2.2 N/A engine and I plan to put it into my '74 VW super beetle- backwards ( I do have a plan for this) but I'm new to Subarus and while the sticker under the hood says "LFJ2.2" I was wondering what engine family this translates to. I see alot of reference to EJ22's and EA82's and such. Also, I have valve noise and a miss in this engine; does this engine have hydraulic lifters or adjustable lifters? I haven't opened the valve cover yet but I susperct valve lifters/adjustment since I can pull the lead spark plug wire on the passenger side with little to no effect.

EJ22, Hydraulic lifters (no adjusters). Miss is probably plug/wires/coil pack related.

There's a flat on top of the engine at the front, just left of the center line that has the engine type on it. Look straight down behind the alternator.

just my opinion, i would get this engine running as perfect as practical before you make the swap. once swapped you will have a good idea of how it should run. hopefully you will be able to tell what problems were there before and what, if any, were caused by the swap.

 

it may make things easier to diagnose.

Where will you put the radiator? I had a 71 Superbeetle from 71 (really became mine in 75) to about 86. Blue convertible - nice car. My first horizontally opposed engine.

I have a few friends trying to talk me into putting one of the good 2.2's that I have (95, 96,97) setting here into my street legal buggy since the VW 1600 in it is "tired".

 

I assume Kennedy engineering makes an adapter plate. I also assume the enigne spins the correct way. For one swap (perhaps Corvair) I believe you needed to play basically with the ring and pinion since the engine spun the other way.

 

 

The rad and associated plumbing is my main reason for not attempting the swap. I won't cutup the blue Metalflake gelcoat body.

 

I guess I should search the web someday. One would think it a semi-common swap.

This is actually a common installation, There is the vanagon/subaru list on yahoo where you can gain lots of informtaion.

I've seen louvered "hoods" in the front with a rad - mostly for the V6 and V8 swaps. Mounted in the rear engine or rear roof usually with electric fans. I never really payed much attention since I was trying to stay air cooled. Considered Corvair (since it's aircooled and a common swap) but they are getting harder to find. Hod a Corvair Monza motor in an offroad buggy years ago. Only issue was trying to keep the front end on the ground long enough to turn!

I owned a corvair. And here i play with it in my head on how to put a subaru engine into a corvair :)
