August 30, 200916 yr I was kinda thinking it would be cool to put geared VW hubs on a subaru.Have the stock subaru axles feeding the gear reduction hubs. You would get massive ground clearance and have the gearing to turn bigger tires.I can figure out the rear, but does anyone have a clue of how to rig up something for the front? heck a 1.6VW can spin 33's with those geared hubs, why not 33's to 35's with a EA or an EJ? wouldnt that be awesome, an EA81 wagon on 35's and actually have the gearing to turn the tires but not stress the axles any more...
August 31, 200916 yr I take it you talking pre 67 bus swing axles. Note they also reverse rotation of the axles. food for thought del
August 31, 200916 yr you could get mog axles, probably cost you close to 5k just for parts not including time to get them to fit and other stuff to make them fit. but they are close to 8:1 ratio
August 31, 200916 yr Ya know, if they reverse the rotation of the axles, then they would be perfect for using a Subaru drivetrain in a rear engine Dune buggy! -Bill

September 1, 200916 yr $$$$$$ and Time That's what I'm made of! Wait, or is it thats what I'm lacking...? One of the other. Cool idea on the hubs, It's always exciting to see the gears turning on ideas around here (get it? gears turning. geared hub thread, I need to go to bed...)
September 1, 200916 yr There is now a company that is making a bolt-on portal kit for certain truck axles (Dana, ect.). I don't remember the name of the outfit, saw it in 4 Wheel & Off Road. They do not reverse rotation. Of course, still a ton of $ and time, as Scott says. Andy

Currently Dana 60 only, they will be right around $7k ( )! http://www.axletech.com/downloads/ATI_MotorsportBro_031809.pdf
September 2, 200916 yr You could build a rear engine soob, reversing the engine, transaxle, driveline and rear diff. Also you could weld both the diffs solid and remove one of the reduction gears front and rear to drive on the street. Seems possible.
